Movie Reviews of Sink the Bismarck!Movie Review: Excellent, Thrilling War Classic! Summary: 5 Stars
I really liked this movie. As both a history and nautical buff, I found it satisfying on many levels. A reliable accounting of the basics told in a suspenseful yet dignified manner that keeps an audience completely rapt for its 137 minutes.
This film could never be made today...it would be mucked up with extranneous subplots and melodrama with a lot of superfluous and showy special effects thrown in. (Think the disasterous Ben Affleck/Josh Hartnett "PEARL HARBOR") Kenneth More and Dana Wynter's pitch perfect performances strike just the right amount of human emotion without going over the top into the realm of soap opera. A real treat to see Edward R. Murrow as himself, too. (Although, he mysteriously disappears from the final quarter of the picture...where'd he go!?)
Bravo! An exciting and thrilling war classic for audiences of all ages. My only complaint is that Fox should have included a documentary or some other pertinent Bismarck-related materials to fill out the skimpy Special Features.

Sink the Bismark, 1960
This is one of my favorite war movies. First, because it tells the story of a momentous event, complete with a gripping human element. Secondly, the movie is much more accurate than most similar pieces and is family friendly and will easily be understood by most.
The story is simple, the Bismark is Nazi Germany's premier surface warship. In order for the Bismark to truly be effective it must break out of the Baltic and North Seas into the Atlantic. In the Atlantic it will be free to disrupt allied shipping and work in cohesion with other German naval units stationed on the coast of France.
This movie tracks the attempt of the Bismark's breakout from the vantage point of a narrator. We see glimpses of the German vantage point but the majority of the movie is dedicated to following the action from the British side. Regardless of the vantage point the message is clear: war is horrible, exacting and some things are worth dying for.
Movie Review: A Memorable Classic of WWII Naval Warfare Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this movie shortly after it came out, and when I was 9 years old.
The movie captures the drama of pursuing and destroying the Bismarck. A British agent in German-occupied Norway spots the PRINCE EUGEN and BISMARCK passing by. But he is shot in his hut by a pursuing German before completing his message back to England.
The HOOD is blown up by the BISMARCK. One of the Naval staff men, realizing that he has just lost his son, is brought to tears, but otherwise maintains the British stiff upper lip. A woman on staff comforts him.
Then comes the dramatic final duel of the BISMARCK and British ships. The German commander yells "Fire!", while the British commander yells "Shoot!"
My father used this movie to teach me a lesson. My 9 year-old self cheered at the scene of drowning German sailors at the end of the movie. My father, a survivor of Gross Rosen and Dachau, told me not to do that.
Movie Review: Outstanding WWII film Summary: 5 Stars
Sink the Bismark is a darn good WWII action film. Although special effects are much better today, it holds up quite well! The characterizations are believable enough to compel us to root for the people. Ironically, the character that most holds the film together is the battleship, Bismark. The story of the short but violent life of the "most powerful" battleship gives the ship its own life. I highly recommend this film for anyone with an inclination to military history or adventure on the oceans!

Movie Review: Classy film gets classy DVD presentation! Summary: 5 Stars
Fox Home Entertainment is to be commended for giving this classic British war movie the DVD presentation it deserves, with flawless picture quality and at the proper widescreen ratio. This DVD is a real joy to watch, particularly for viewers like myself who've previously seen only the pan & scan TV prints of this film. The DVD offers some savory extras as well: A 1941 Fox Movietone Newsreel segment (Lowell Thomas narrating) on the Bismarck's short but lethal career; both the American and Spanish theatrical preview trailers (both introduced by legendary newsman Ed Murrow), as well as trailers for several other Fox War Classics DVDs: 13 Rue Madeleine, The Desert Fox, The Blue Max, The Enemy Below and Heaven Knows Mr. Allison.
