Movie Reviews of Silverado (2 Disc Superbit Gift Set)

Movie Review: the whole shooting match
Summary: 5 Stars

Cowboys. Horses. Gunfights. Thievery. Dance hall girls. Smokey saloons. Showdowns. Corrupt sheriffs. This movie has it all. (Even,in passing, throwing in tepees at a fort, so Indians are represented.)

This is a western western, and it shouldn't leave anyone bored. It's as though Lawrance and Mark Kasdan took every western they ever saw growing up, shook them up in a jar, and dumped it out on a coffee table, and randomly grabbed plot bits to string together into a cohesive whole. They populated their film with a cornucopia of the best in character actors; it opens with Scott Glenn, a man made to do a Western, with his craggy looks and gunmetal voice; it adds along with Kevin Kline, dubious, adaptable, unhappy that his "whole rig" was hijacked by bandits but equally ready to do something about getting his stuff back; Kevin Costner - in about the only role I've ever thought he didn't act like a block of wood - playing Scott Glenn's goofy younger brother with a penchant for getting himself into seemingly inextricable trouble, but who is a whiz with a Colt and an acrobat on a horse; and Danny Glover, a man returning to the family ranch to assist his parents, and who is wrongly set upon by bigots in a saloon - much to their dismay.

This is the core group of a cast with so many other excellent additions - most notibly Brian Dennehy, as the corrupt (and formerly bandit) sheriff; Linda Hunt, in an absolutely luminous turn as a saloon manager (I know that sounds like a contradiction in terms; trust me, it's not), Jeff Goldblum, playing, essentially, Jeff Goldblum (his characterizations, regardless of content - here he is a professional gambler - are inimitably his to run with), and John Cleese as a wildly out-of-place sheriff in the little town where all the core protagonists come together. Everything can, and does, happen on the way to Silverado, and once there, the Snidely Whiplashes of the picture take over, and it's totally the good guys against the bad guys in fine old Western style.

There are LOTS of extras in this two-disc set (I've had it almost a year and still haven't worked my way through it all)and the cinematography alone is worth buying it. There is a lovely use of hues here, more than colour; soft browns and grays, almost like old daguerrotype photos; one scene where Kevin Costner's character comes home to his sister's house has always remained with me, a still life etched in my brain; a kerosene lamp turned low, a slice of pie set out for the latecomer, all in sepia and gold.

I've loved this movie since I first saw it in the theater and rate it up at the top with all the Westerns I've seen in my life (and I grew up with them so I've seen a LOT). Highly recommended.
