Movie Reviews of Silver Streak

Movie Review: A train ride to remember
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember seeing this film upon its first release, and really enjoyed it. Scriptwise, it's really no more than lightweight Hitchcock fare. Gene Wilder--one of my favorite comic actors--plays it fairly straight through the first half. Then the real fun begins when he runs into Richard Pryor's character halfway through. This was the beginning of a great screen partnership (that restroom scene with Pryor trying to teach Wilder how to be black has to be one of the funniest moments in screen history) which took both Wilder & Pryor through four films ("Stir Crazy" was hilarious; the last two were disappointing). What chemistry!
The supporting cast is top-notch. Jill Clayburgh is sort of shoe-horned into the damsel-in-distress leading lady role; but she's so engaging that you can't take your eyes off her. Ned Beatty is the conventioner (aka federal agent) who warns Wilder of the danger. Patrick McGoohan is sophisticated villainy as Devereau. Ray Walston is weasally fun as Devereau's right-hand thug. And an underused Scatman Crothers gives some light comic touches as the train's porter.
A blend of comedy, action, suspense & mystery, "Silver Streak" is slightly dated but still lots of fun!

Movie Review: It's Hug 'n' Munch All the Way to Chicago!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Silver Streak can be considered a spoof on a movie such as "Murder on the Orient Express" where Gene Wilder plays an editor named George Caldwell who decides to travel by train to Chicago on what he had hoped to just kick back and relax on the three day journey when he gets tangled up with romance and murder.

Enroute, he gets thrown off, knocked off and finally jumps off the train as he tries to solve a mystery on who murdered Professor Schreiner together with an undercover federal agent, Bob Sweet (Ned Beatty). He also teams up with a smalltime crook, Grover Muldoon (Richard Pryor), while police are vainly trying to track him down thinking that he was wanted for murder when he was actually innocent, and the life of Schreiner's secretary and George's newfound love Hilly Burns (Jill Clayburgh) was in jeopardy aboard the train as George tries to save her from imminent danger.

So many bizarre things happen throughout each scene that this film is not worth missing for anyone who is into romance, murder, comedy or for just being a train buff in general.

Movie Review: One the greatest films I have ever seen
Summary: 5 Stars

This was one of the first films I have ever seen at the theatre and one of the greatest. I have been telling friends and family for over 20 years that they need to watch this picture. Gene Wilder is calm and caring but also very funny. Richard Pryor is sneaky and clever but also hilarious at the same time. I have always been fascinated with train travel so it helps that this picture takes place on a train. The scenery is beautiful, the music is sweet and the people that Wilder and Pryor come across are entertaining. Gene Wilder tries to milk a cow, goes flying in a bi plane and even tries to pass for black by putting shoe polish on his face with the help of Pryor. This film was nominated for a few awards and walked away with some as well, I can see why.

Movie Review: DVD looks good to me!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've waited for this title on DVD ever since the format arrived. Even though the disc is essentially bare-bones (although the original theatrical trailer is included), you do get an anamorphic widescreen transfer--I've never seen the movie look this good. For the price, not a bad deal. I'm not sure what the other reviewer meant about the DVD being too dark; the colors and brightness look just fine to me. As to the movie itself, I always thought it was best described as a screwball comedy on rails. Only drawback (for some) might be that a lot of the comedy was probably unintentional! If you're a train freak like me, you know you have to have it.

Movie Review: Wilder and Pryor -vs- Martin and Lewis.. And the winners are WILDER AND PRYOR!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is no doubt a great comedy team. And the movie Silver Streak is a well balanced flick with action/comedy/adventure. Not short on talent. Although I haven't seen a movie I didn't like that starred Wilder and Pryor. We start out our adventure in boarding the Silver Streak. Then settling in for a nice quiet and hopefully relaxing trek to Chicago. NOT! A trip that is anything but boring. A fast paced show from start to finish with just a few stops along the way. If you like this DVD of Gene and Richard. May I recommend a few more...Such as....See No Evil, Hear No Evil....Stir Crazy....and the picture that started it all...Blazing Saddles.
