Movie Reviews of Silk

Movie Review: Hate it or Love it
Summary: 4 Stars

Wow... I saw this last night not knowing a thing about it, and what can I say, I really liked it.

I've read the other reviews and can see that people feel strongly in either hating this picture, or loving it. I guess drawing out strong emotional responses like this is a good thing.

The film worked for me. It was visually stunning, and accompanied with an equally beautiful score that complimented the cinematography perfectly.

I found the story compelling. Love and desire, and how they weigh on the psyche, and the torment and anguish they can cause.

The actors provided the framework and the story was told in a more visual and musical sense. When put all together they seemed to click with me.

What drove the story home was the last letter and the twist behind it. That said a lot about the power of love, and appreciating what we have.

Sorry to all those who hated this, but I enjoyed this film and the story it tried to convey.

Movie Review: Poetic Silk
Summary: 4 Stars

In an American film environment, this film I see is misunderstood easily. This is a tone poem and a human drama about inner conflict, desire, and true love. I thoroughly enjoyed the sweep of the movie, the sense of the historical era within which it is set, and the contemplative beauty of the music set within an intelligence I rarely find in American film. Perhaps this is a film for those interested in artistic expression, inner contemplation, and human relations. I really enjoyed this film.

Movie Review: Not bad, but seems longer than it should
Summary: 3 Stars

Silk is about... well silk. More specifically, it is a love story involving a silk trader, his wife, and his concubine in Japan. While the silk trader (Herve) still loves his wife, he seems haunted by his experiences and the concubine in Japan. However, the movie isn't like James Clavell's Shogun and doesn't spend much time in Japan. Rather, it focuses on Herve's attempts to reckon with his emotions.

This movie isn't a half-bad love story. It just seems long, much longer than its 109 minutes. Part of the problem is that the fielm doesn't ever stick to one scene or event for too long. Herve's trips to Japan last only a matter of minutes. At one point, the focus is on the village, the next on the ailing wife. The viewer never gets the chance to become absorbed in the film. Thus, we never fully understand why he fell in love and the depth of his emotions. Perhaps the film should have been longer, with more character development.

Not bad, but it falls short of great.

Movie Review: "What We Were Meant To Do We Have Done"
Summary: 3 Stars

The '07 romance `Silk' is one of the most visually stunning films in recent memory which in and of itself is enough reason for one to give this movie a viewing. Unfortunately once you move beyond the lush, sumptuous landscape and the hopelessly romantic soundtrack you come face to face with a slow, plodding storyline that even the most lovelorn amongst us would have trouble staying with.

Keira Knightley is the vision of loveliness her audience has come to expect but love interest Michael Pitt is way over his head, failing to display the emotional depth and angst required for this role. With a more established, polished actor in this role who knows, maybe this could've been a love story for the ages?

Movie Review: don't bother with this one
Summary: 3 Stars

I found this new dvd on sale in a store for $3.00 and I was all excited because I'm a big Keira Knightley fan. What a let down. Great cinematography, beautiful music, not enough of Knightley, and the movie was VERY slow. It almost seemed it happened in real time - years! If Knightley's character was so important in her husband's life, I don't feel her character was developed enough. Period movies are among my favorites but this one almost put me to sleep. Good intentions, but it unfortunately was not successful. Now I know why it was $3.00. One reviewer wrote "If you don't get it, don't review it." I got it, I just didn't like it.
