Movie Reviews of Silent Running

Movie Review: Finding foresters
Summary: 5 Stars

Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) and crew are in charge of taking care of the last remaining forests. These forests are a conservation project in space. Aside from my cat (some cats will eat the oddest things), Lowell seems to be the only one to enjoy fresh cantaloupe. There rest of mankind prefers ersatz food.

There are three cuties Huey, Dewey, and Louie. They are robots; however you feel sorrier for them when they get hurt or worse, than you do for those insensitive humans who think that going home to their families is more important than watching unnecessary plants. So bury your personal problems like Lowell and get on with the important stuff like saving the forest.

This message in a bottle story is worth watching periodically to keep a perspective on what is important. Paper or plastic. Just bring a lot of Kleenex.

Movie Review: GREEN SPACE PEACE
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember this film ,"silent running", when at 80's years the spanish TV emited at the morning into on rare program about the preservetion of the primitives americans villages: apaches, arapahoes ,etc. It's curiosly because when i was finished to see the film ,the paralelism was powerful...and now at the 2006 the theme ,the messege of the film, is the same : the preservation of ours nature's recurses is vital for the human supervivence.

It's very paradoxal as the protagonist (Bruce Derm)in reality is a killer, but in these conditions ,for the public, he isn't!!.
Why?...yours comrades became a monsters ,the microweathers sections of the navy don't have any importance for them, and the last the authentic real human in the movie will be the little robots!!

It`s a great film now in a wide screen and good extras DVD!!

Movie Review: From a time when preservation was referred to as the Ecology.
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Ecology" was a very serious issue in the 1970s and we seem to be back to again now. This film presents what happens when the earth becomes so polluted and over populated that forests are preserved by sending them into space until things can be changed and they can be returned to where they belong.

The unfortunate result is it doesn't happen that way and the order is given to destroy the forests as they will not be returning to earth after many years of preservation in space. A conservationist, played by Bruce Dern, decides to take matters into his own hands.

This film is a combination of Science Fiction coupled with "The Ecology" issue and they were even able to get Joan Baez to perform some of the music for the film.

This is a great film and a must have for collectors of Sci-Fi!

Movie Review: SPACE 1971...
Summary: 5 Stars

SILENT RUNNING is a wonderfully quiet, calm sci-fi adventure in space. Bruce Dern is perfect as the conscience of the film, seemingly the only man left w/ a heart. Earth is in ruin, and Dern's character, along w/ three cohorts, is aboard the deep-space bio-dome, Valley Forge. With no forests remaining on earth, the Valley Forge carries the final greenery. Of course, something goes wrong, the mission is aborted, and the huge bio-domes are to be detonated. Dern disagrees, and takes lethal action to avoid the inevitable. SILENT RUNNING has that 70s "vibe" found in other films like IDAHO TRANSFER, 2001: A SPACE ODDYSEY, etc., a mood / atmosphere that exists only in that decade. Highly recommended...

Movie Review: Very contemporary, 37 years later
Summary: 5 Stars

"Silent Running" is one of those films that sneaks up on you. Bruce Dern, the only real actor in the film (there are others, but they are more stage dressing), is an established "character actor," and that character is usually crazy. In "Silent Running," everyone seems to think Freeman Lowell (Dern's character) is crazy, which is important to the film, but you gradually come to wonder if, in his own quiet, idiosyncratic way, Freeman may be the only sane human you see. Three robots become important characters and add greatly to the film. Touching, subtle and blunt, the film is visually stunning, and every single thing you see has meaning. Worth watching several times.
