Movie Reviews of Silent NightMovie Review: The Power of Peace Summary: 5 Stars
Silent Night is a story about how peace can transform and heal. In the midst of terrible fighting between the Americans and Germans during World War II, an isolated cabin in a German forest, and its two inhabitants, becomes the stage for what is a gripping drama on Christmas Eve. From the moment it starts, there is something special about this movie. Linda Hamilton puts in a convincing and riviting performance as a German mother left alone with her son in her isolated cabin as they become embroiled in a confrontation between American and German soldiers, both sides out to destroy each other, in her very house. It's only because of the mother's deep faith in the meaning of peace that the opposing forces are transformed. Although this is a movie set on the eve of Christmas and as such has an understandably religious undertone, its message of the power of peace trancends all faiths whether one is a believer or not and is a cathartic experience. The wonderful black and white filming serves to underscore the isolation of the cabin in the cold German winter and the acting is outstanding from all members of the cast. Linda Hamilton is so transformed in her role that you might not recognize her as the Linda Hamilton of the well-known Terminator movies. Whether you are a beleiver in Christian faith or not, this is a movie for all people to experience. And if you are a believer you'll want to see this movie on Christmas Eve. Run out and get this movie, it's a movie you'll never forget.
Movie Review: An Inspirational Story Summary: 5 Stars
In 2007 while doing that guy thing called channel surfing I found this movie. The story of Frau Elizabeth Vicken ,Linda Hamilton, hiding from the Second World War in a cabin in the Ardennes Forest with her last son Eric finds herself in the middle of the Battle of the Bulge. On the day before Christmas she is visited by 3 Battle weary American Soldiers lost from their unit she invited the soldiers into her home. She has only one rule no guns in her house. The Soldier overcome their wariness and agree they will share their rations with her and stay the night. Later three war weary German Soldiers approach the house and are given the same conditions by Frau Vicken which a agreed to by the German Hauptman.
Though the characters start the movie as caricatures that we have see in every war movie they become individuals as the story unfolds much as a group of strangers at a dinner party interact getting to know each other and the soldier's begin to see that they have much in common with each other and a tentative detente begins to develop between the two groups.
In the end the two groups go back to war but with an understanding of each other that shows that all men would be brothers if given the chance. Though this movie is billed as a Christmas Film it is a universal film with a great story line and good acting. I recommend this film to all people. It should become a staple of the holidays and an inspiration to us all.
Movie Review: The Best Christmas Movie Ever Summary: 5 Stars
Each year at Christmas time I use a Readers' Theater play with my sixth grade reading students called "The Night the War Stopped." The story is based on the true event of WWII that is also depicted in the movie, "Silent Night." When I learned from a student that this movie existed, I had to get it!
While the story lines of the play and the movie are a bit different, the main events are not: On Christmas Eve in 1944, three American soldiers and three German soldiers spend the night in a little cottage in the woods in Germany-- their hostess being a feisty German mother who will not allow guns in her house on the holiest night of the year. It is wonderful and remarkable how everyone complies with her demands. As the movie unfolds, we come to see each soldier as a human being with a story of his own, and the enemy soldiers come to understand that truth as well.
This movie has horror, suspense, tenderness, love, joy, and peace all wrapped up into one beautiful package. The acting was most convincing, and the movie is one my husband and I will watch every Christmas from now on. This is the best Christmas movie ever!
Movie Review: Too recent to be a classic? Summary: 5 Stars
Part chick-flick, part war story, part commentary on the human condition. Hard to pin this film down to a single genre. All I know is that I like it!
It's a pleasure to watch - for all ages. Linda H. is superb in her role, probably the best I've ever seen from her. The supporting cast is nothing short of awesome, appears as though they really immersed themselves in their parts. A fine combination of story, acting, and a bit of hollywood license created a movie that, IMHO, will only become more popular over time.
I'm puzzled that Hallmark hasn't been more agressive in marketing this movie. Not every offering from Hallmark is of this quality, after all. Oh well - maybe that will keep the prices down.
Even the edited version is great, but cutting the final scene in the region 1 DVD has me scratching my head. If you've seen the unedited version, you know what I mean. That scene grounds the entire movie in reality, as far as I'm concerned. Your mileage may vary.
Movie Review: A Christmas Holiday "Must See". Summary: 5 Stars
I first learned of this true story over 25 years ago when seeing a brief low-budget 35mm version produced by a religious organization. Though the quality of the movie was very poor, the inspiration of the true event was wonderful!
In this more current remake, Linda Hamilton portrays Elizabeth Venkin who host an unlikely household of Christmas Eve guest at the end of war-torn World War II Germany. Every person who I have shared this movie with have the same feeling of warmth and encouragement as they view this movie for the first time.
This is a must-see Christmas Season movie! One that if I don't have the opportunity to see it every coming year, my Christmas season will not be complete. The world would be in a different position today if it were filled with morally courageous individuals like Elizabeth Venkin!
