Movie Reviews of Silent Hill [Blu-ray]Movie Review: awesome Summary: 5 Stars
I have played the original Silent Hill for the Playstation One, and let me tell you, the main story of this movie is almost exactly the same as the video game! I'm not kidding- I knew exactly what was going to happen because the stories were so much alike that a part of me was actually worried that I might be wasting my time watching the movie when I could be playing the game.
As you've probably heard, the video game Silent Hill was extremely groundbreaking in the year 1999 because the game was SO scary and SO different compared to every other game that was on the market at the time. Now, with that in mind, this movie failed to live up to the intense atmosphere of the video game.
However, it doesn't matter, because the movie did a respectable job at scaring me, and you know, having the main character be a woman who has to find her daughter instead of a father who has to find his daughter (like the video game) may have actually been a better decision. If you've played the game, you'd know that Harry Mason was a REALLY bad voice actor. The woman who plays the mother in the film is really good.
Also, considering this movie came out years after the video game it's based on, technology has improved which means you are guaranteed to see better visual effects in the movie than you would in 1999 playing the game. Silent Hill the game was more about remaining quiet and building an atmosphere, whereas the movie has some really unusual effects such as blood rising off the floor and walls and increasing the overall amount of action.
The similarities between the movie and the game don't stop there- remember when you had to run around looking for your daughter in the beginning of the game? It's in the movie. Remember that snowy town with buildings all around it, and only a human police officer around? It's in the movie. Remember finding a note from your daughter that she's at the school? It's in the movie. A lot of things from the game are in the movie.
Another complaint people have with this movie is that the story doesn't make sense. That was a popular complaint with the video game too. I don't like it when horror movies make sense, to be honest. I can't feel scared when the story begins making total sense. Silent Hill leaves you wondering what's going on. You'll know what's going on. The movie just takes a weird direction later on that may end up confusing you.
Really good movie worth watching, even if you've played the video game a million times like me.
