Movie Reviews of Sid & NancyMovie Review: Smack-crossed lovers. Summary: 4 Stars
Humorously tragic (or is it tragically humorous?) fantasia about the love affair between Sid Vicious, infamous bassist of the Sex Pistols, and his wife Nancy, a former groupie of the band...There were two movies during that decade that snatched the Zeitgeist, both directed by Alex Cox -- *Repo Man* and *Sid and Nancy*. Both were required viewing if you wanted to be considered hip....Surprisingly, each movie holds up very well today, particularly this one. One would've thought that Alex Cox would eventually become one of our great directors...At any rate . . . this movie meticulously chronicles heroin addiction and all-around nihilist despair without making either one seem too cool. The obvious danger inherent in this type of movie is to make it all look like..."some fashion show". Cox, perhaps because his lovers are so doomed from the outset, maintains a surprisingly detached tone throughout, occasionally displaying a somewhat superior, From-On-High attitude.(Scenes that come to mind: the trash falling like vile snowflakes on the couple as they kiss by a dumpster; Nancy bemusedly watching their litter-strewn room at the Chelsea burn down, etc.) These directorial interruptions are generally to the detriment of the film. However, there's enough focus on the personal stuff -- the sexual relationship, the drug addiction, the festering KFC bucket on the nightstand next to the bed -- to compensate for the intermittent immaturities. Despite the lack of narrative incident, the atmosphere is finally so fanatically detailed that by the end we feel as if we've been through some sort of epic treatment. --...The general complaint seems to be that *Sid and Nancy* takes too many liberties with the "real story" (as if anyone knows, or should even care, what that might be). Okay, look: it's a MOVIE, guys, not a documentary. It's BASED on real people and events. It makes no claim to be a true story in the sense of being factually correct in every particular. That being said, I feel that it IS a true story in the sense of mood, of tone, of atmosphere, and especially of the sad end-result. *Sid and Nancy* is thematically, even spiritually, a true story. And that's more than enough.
Movie Review: Great drama (NOT biopic); fascinating characters and times Summary: 4 Stars
I viewed this movie as a music fan, not knowing anything about the Sex Pistols as a band or individuals. Viewing this not as a documentary, but as a dramatic movie based loosely on some famous punk rock events, this is a compelling film. Watching life in the fastline and the sex, drugs, and rock n roll antics makes for a good movie.
Gary Oldman is mesmerizing as Sid, and it was crushing to watch a human being self-destruct on drugs. Reportedly, Nancy was foul and grating in real life, but I found the way actress Chloe Webb portrayed her forced and over-the-top. Webb tried too hard and came off unrealistec. Maybe Nancy really was unrealistically annoying in real life, but it didn't work well for me in the movie. Reportedly, rock's more recently famously aggravating girlfriend, Courtney Love, wanted to play the role of Nancy (she does have a small role in the film). Seeing her performance in the The People Vs. Larry Flynt has me convined that she may have been a better choice for the role of Nancy, and that she could have pulled off the outlandishness of Nancy without forcing it.
For people wanting to learn more about Nancy Spungen's life, her mother's book And I Don't Want to Live This Life is recommended.
Movie Review: F'ng Americans! All They Do Is Think About F"ng Sex! Summary: 4 Stars
Wow, this is one powerful perfect portrayel of the legacy that was Sid Viscious. Of course ive seen "The Filth And The Fury" and most punk documentaries, but this being a film gave me more of a feeling of what Sid was really like. From all ive seen and read about Sid and his relationship with Nancy, this film hit the mark straight on. The chemistry between Sid And Nancy is so bizarre but you cant help and start to care about the two. The performances are beyond belief. Gary Oldman to this day I honestly believe is an acting GOD. Hes simply amazing. After all of the tradgedy is all done my favorite scene of the entire movie has got to be Sid dancing with the little kids right before Nancy arrives in a taxi. This is such a great, powerful, funny film that will make you feel like you knew Sid And Nancy as personal friends. I admit that in the end I actually felt really sad even though I knew what was coming. Bottom line, this is yet another masterpiece added to my dvd reviews, and this one for sure should not be missed. This is a must!
Movie Review: A Profile of a Train Wreck. Summary: 4 Stars
What I enjoyed most about Sid and Nancy was the profile of the Sex Pistols who (unfortunately) are only a vicarious part of the plot. I know that Johnny Lydon did not approve of this film, but I absolutely loved Schofield's portrayal of him here. In fact, he almost steals the spotlight from the train wreck that is the relationship between the main protagonists. I also thought that technically this film was outstanding. My favorite scene involved the press/party boat. After it was forcibly docked, the shot of Sid and Nancy gliding through the melee was exceptional. This movie has something in common with all period pieces we remember--it is incredibly well-done. My own appreciation for the film, however, was sabotaged by the fact that I was not even remotely interested in the love affair between Sid and Nancy. I found the gradual disintegration of their lives to rather depressing.
Movie Review: Self Expressive Decay Summary: 4 Stars
The legendary bassist Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman) from the Sex Pistols meets Nancy Spungen (Chloe Webb), a heroin addict, who draws Sid into the addiction of heroin and emotional turmoil. Their relationship is a difficult one that seems to be next to parasitical where Nancy feeds off of Sid's acquired addition causing an emotional tug-of-war. Eventually, Sid attempts to go on tour with the Sex Pistols in the US, but the band cannot keep together due to Sid's gradually declining performances on stage due to the drugs. Sid gives a feeble attempt to launch his solo career with Nancy as his manager, but this too is ill fated. This turns out to be a dance that Sid cannot keep up with, and the future gives the impression of being dark. Sid and Nancy is a film that provides an outstanding performance by the actors and at the end awards the audience with a worthwhile experience.
