Movie Reviews of Show Me LoveMovie Review: One that should be viewed in schools.... Summary: 5 Stars
Show Me Love (Original Title: ****ing Åmål) The title has no allusion towards sex, however, the title origin from the extremely monotonous town of Åmål in mid Sweden. This Swedish creation is an excellent film about teenage homosexuality and the pain that the gay adolescence face in today's society. The film is great, since it displays consideration for the theme with both seriousness and humor. Anyone who views the film does not have to be gay in order to recognize himself or herself as they were as teenagers with curiousness and strife for maturity. I must say that this is one of the better GLBT films that I have seen in a long time, however, the transfer is horrendous and the subtitles are often misspelled and grammatically wrong. Then again, I am fluent in Swedish, which helps.
Movie Review: Wonderfully Sweet but Amazingly Real Summary: 5 Stars
This movie captures how teenagers interact and feel in a way that bigger budget Hollywood movies never do. I felt that I was observing real teenagers with all their screwed up emotions, disfunctional relationships and silly world views. I was drawn to the character Agnes, wonderfully portrayed by Rebecca Liljeberg, in a way that one is drawn to those rare characters in exceptional books, characters who stay with you long after you have finished reading. I find that connection to be very rare with necessarily more superficial movie characters. If she was an American actress, Rebecca would probably become one of those instant teenage icons, release a CD, design clothing, etc. For her sake it is probably better that she is Sweedish.
Movie Review: Vintage Moodysson... Summary: 5 Stars
Show Me Love is a fantastic Swedish import from 1998. It is a simple, warm-hearted story about two young girls living in a small, remote town in Sweden ("Amal"). As they fight boredom and peer pressure, popularity differences and the stigma of homosexual love, the two sense an attraction, but for a long time, don't know what to do about it, if anything, and/or how to deal with the feelings that crop up.Really though, this film is for everyone. It is more about being yourself (becoming yourself?), and being true to yourself, and following your heart, no matter who you are, or who you love. I highly recommend this movie, and it is truly one of my favorites! If you liked this one, see Together! Also a great film. Five stars.
Movie Review: 5 stars as a movie with a lesbian theme; 4 stars as any movie Summary: 5 Stars
This is not a 5-star movie in terms of quality, but a 4-star one. But as a lesbian-theme movie, it is among the best. It deals with the topic of first love and first kiss and first relationship... It is about growing up, fitting in, finding yourself, standing up for yourself... It is sweet and angsty: you will fall in love with the characters and you will remember how it felt to have same or similar concerns that they have. Even though the two characters are totally different, their experiences are universal - I believe you will find similarities with your own young self in both of them. I was thoroughly charmed by this movie and even remembering it makes me feel warm and happy. It is a feel-good movie that I recommend!
Movie Review: Heartbreakingly Great Summary: 5 Stars
It's a familiar plot - two star crossed Swedish teens from different walks of life fall for each other and face the disapproval of the mean ol' world - but it's turned into a perfect movie. That Agnes and Elin are both girls adds political weight, but the film is so much bigger than gender issues. Somehow, the director, Lukas Moodysson, cuts through all the turgid, [junky] sentiment of American movies and captures the pain and heartache of being a teenager without any artifice, leaving something wonderful in its wake. It makes other "serious" teen movies, especially Baz Luhrman's version of Romeo & Juliet, look like they were directed by Michael Bay.
As perfect as perfect gets.
