Movie Review: The New Generation of Swedish Cinema

So many of the other reviewers have covered the plot basics, so I'm leaving them out. If you want a plot synopsis, go to Wikipedia.
No matter how old or young you are, this film is guaranteed to take you back to your teenage years and let you re-live good and bad like it was yesterday. You are also guaranteed to identify with at least one of the characters. And I do not really consider it to be a "lesbian" film, even though it has a lesbian character. Don't ask me how to explain it, you'll just have to watch and see for yourself.
It is just an absolutely amazing film, especially when you consider that it is Lukas Moodysson's first real "feature" film, and was produced on such a meager budget. I am actually more impressed in many ways with this film than with most of Hollywood's blockbuster big-budget special effects films.
I am no film critic, so I can't explain it, but for some reason this film just draws you in and won't let you go. It must be a combination of the script, great acting and directing, and the semi-realistic style of cinematography. There is drama, humor, romance, family dynamics, the works. And it just feels like you are in the film, even if you don't speak Swedish.
This is also the film that more-or-less introduced me to Swedish cinema. Since watching it, I've bought several others including Slim Susie (Smala Sussie), Together (Tillsammans), Eva and Adam: Four Birthdays and a Fiasco, and more. It's true that Ingmar Bergman's old films have given Swedish cinema a reputation for being melancholy, which I can totally understand after watching some of them. Rest assured, "Show Me Love" is anything but melancholy.
Lukas Moodysson is a very gifted filmmaker, in my humble opinion. He knows how to write a script that captivates your interest, gets you to identify with the characters, and also entertains you. Some of his later films are quite a bit more serious, like Lilja 4-Ever, but it's still a great film.
The two lead actors give excellent performances, especially for being teenagers at the time. I was somewhat disappointed to find out that Rebecka Liljeberg only starred in a few films, because I thought she was so stellar in this film. Alexandra Dalström was also very captivating.
Show Me Love is currently my all-time favorite film, and will surely remain on at least my top ten list for many years. My criteria for a 5-star film is one that is a) excellent in acting, script, directing, and/or cinematography, and b) good enough to watch it again and again. I've seen this movie at least 30 times and haven't tired of it yet. I watched it three times the first night I saw it.
