Movie Reviews of ShopgirlMovie Review: Amazing. Outstanding. Lovely. Summary: 5 Stars
My god. Some of the people who have ripped apart this movie have utterly missed it's message, point, and beauty. I wasn't going to write a review, but I couldn't stand thinking that those opinions might change someone's idea of seeing this movie. Where I come from with this review: I've read the book, I'm in film as an actress, playwright, director, and screenwriter. The film is amazing and touching. It builds slowly, as life builds slowly. The characters have their oddities but not all people in life are 100% perfect. The characters are far from flat and you care for them because they are part of humanity. The camera work is stunning. I haven't seen the camera work so well since American Beauty or Amalie. I know I will be berated because I personally love this film, but my opinion needed to be out there so that someone might view this movie with an honest eye and have the chance to love it too. I truly hope, for you, that you find this and cherish it.
Movie Review: Now this is a real good Date Movie Summary: 5 Stars
Not that crap called "Date Movie" with Allyson Hannigan.
"Shopgirl" follows a love triangle among three characters:
Mirabelle who works as a salesperson, Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman)
whose an artist and slacker and Ray Porter (Steve Martin)
a wealthy businessman.
This movie has solid performances all the way around, the
characters are very likable, there are some funny jokes
all around. There are some themes about love and relationship.
When Mirabelle and Jeremy get "together" they look like two
frightened virgins afraid to get it on but with Ray and
Mirabelle finds a more mature partner and a good mate
to be around with.
Claire Danes is really sensational I'am surprised she didn't
get a Golden Globe nod or an Oscar nod.
"Shopgirl" is one of the better movies in 2005. It's funny,
intelligent and charming. Go see it now!!!!
Movie Review: A Very Touching Movie Summary: 5 Stars
I was boohooing by the end of this very moving film. Keep your tissues nearby. Steve Martin, who I just discovered actually wrote the novella upon which this movie was based, plays an older, very cold, very calculating man, who pursues and then uses a much younger, naive, lonely girl, strictly for her body. A younger, almost annoying, very weird artist also pursues the Shopgirl, but with very different motives.
What I loved about this movie is that it has a very happy ending, as the young lady finds true love and is able to move on from what could have been a shattering experience with Martin's character. I have always admired Ms. Danes and she has done a great job, as usual, in this movie.
Movie Review: Steve's Intellectual Gem Summary: 5 Stars
We knew he had it in him. This film should (but maybe won't) do for Steve Martin what Lost in Translation did for Bill Murray - establish him as a matured artist. The book is different from the film - as it should be. The book offers more relationship philosophy; the film is a bit tidier and as satisfying on its own terms. Somehow, having Steve be both a character and the narrator strikes an interesting chord - as though he is his own Greek chorus, like something in his soul knows more than he does consciously.
Jason Schwartzman is dead on. I couldn't take my eyes off him. He's so real and alive, and thus compelling. Clare Danes is perfect. Bravo for a great ensemble piece.
Movie Review: Good movie. Summary: 5 Stars
I fell into this film and became immersed in it. Captivating! The cast, story and production were all very good... if not great!
I am always impressed by Steve Martin's talent. I hear he is a perfectionist in all of his performances and work. It shows here. My girl friend and I talked about this movie on and off for days after we watched it. It explores the subject matter of love and how different personality types engage with the powerful force of love.
I would recommend this film. Especially to all types of couples. Old, young, new, old, emerging and regressing. The film looks at love, and it is beautiful.
