Movie Reviews of ShopgirlMovie Review: Impressed... to say the least Summary: 5 Stars
This definitely won't be one of those movies that I watch once and toss onto the shelf of the forgotten. The cast was everything it needed to be to pull off the interesting characters they portray.
Bridgette Wilson-Sampras was the one person that I didn't have any interest in. She was sprinkled throughout the beginning of the film and then once she's finally introduced into the story, her existence becomes more than pointless.
Jason Schwartzman, on the other hand, was my favorite actor and character. He was charming, odd, funny, and one hundred percent lovable. I wish he had more screen time in the middle of the movie, but was still more than pleased with what he did for this movie. Why doesn't he get cast more often?!
Overall, Shopgirl has a basic love story that is portrayed in a way that's anything but typical. I felt confusion and hurt on behalf of all the main characters. It made me realize that there aren't many people that can truly give you what you need emotionally. So when you find a person who does, don't be oblivious to the simple beauty that it can bring into your life.
Movie Review: WOW!!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
How did I miss this in the theaters. I don't ever remeber hearing about this movie or even the novella. I can't believe Steve Martin wrote such a touching, beautiful tale. After seeing the film I can't wait to order the book. What a charming, funny, sweet, thought provoking and beautifully made movie. Not for the immature or those with attention deficit disorder, which by the way comprises most of American audiences. Claire is such a delight to watch and although not one of hollywoods big-boobed, beautiful ppl, she is one of todays top-notched actresses, the likes of Hilary Swank. And Jason is just absolutley hilarious as the loveable but aimless artist type inspired to better himself. And Steve who has already proven himself to be both a comedic and dramatic actor surprised me not only with his really good performance but with the fact that he is the author of the story. I'm definitly buying this one. Anyone that likes well made, thoughtful movies will enjoy this one. Reminds me of how movies use to be made in the old days without all the violence and graphic pointless sex, just a beautiful well thoughtout script.
Movie Review: shopgirl, low self esteem girl Summary: 5 Stars
i really enjoyed this film.mirabel came from a home where she didn't feel any love from her father because of his psycological disconnection from the war.in the beginning of the film ray questions her about the relationship with her father, thus letting him know that the value of it depends on what mirabel has to offer as a woman.mirabel striked me as a very feminine, sensual woman who has alot of love that she wants to give away for free.she is so anxious for a relationship that she.... calls jeremy back for a second date after the first date was a disaster.mirabel should have followed the advice of her coworker Lisa on how to date a man.what sparked my concern is that she expected ray to want to committ to her and love her,but why would a woman expect a man to fall in love with her after she sleeps with him on the second date,as she did the same thing with jeremy.she was not a good enough challenge for ray.i believe if you have any part of sensuality in you,you will love this film.it is not a fast paced film, mainly dialogue so you have to pay close attention to the events,so enjoy.
Movie Review: I loved this movie! Summary: 5 Stars
I haven't read the novella this movie was based on, but I have read Steve Martin's other novel "The Pleasure of My Company." That book was endearing, but not great. This movie delivered in a way that I wasn't really expecting. The casting was perfect, and the chemistry between Martin and Danes was surprisingly good. Everything about how this film was put together worked: the dialogue, the camera angles, the awkward silences, the pauses and captured look-in-the-eye that says so much. All perfectly crafted. I even cried at one point! I rarely have that kind of reaction from a movie. I really liked the evolution of the characters, and found something so real, so true, so oddly familiar about several of them. Definitely a movie to watch, especially for those who have the patience to curl up and patiently wait for the story to unfold. This isn't an action-packed, plot-driven movie. This is a well-nuanced, character-driven journey. No summer blockbuster here. But, while those movies typically bore me and are utterly forgettable, this one will stick with me for some time, I'm sure.
Movie Review: "He cannot justify his actions except well, that it was life." Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is absolutely amazing. I have seen it three times thus far and plan on seeing it many more. I was never a fan of Steve Martin. However, this film gives me a whole new respect for him as both a writer and an actor. I rented this movie a while back because of Claire Danes. She has always been a favorite of mine. From the moment this movie starts you are pulled in by her character. She conveys the part of Mirabelle so well and you really feel for her. This story is as true to life as it gets. I have experienced a little bit of everything she has in this movie (except the older rich guy part) but the same scenarios. Whether you are a male like Ray Porter, insecure about getting too close to someone, or a guy like Jeremy who hangs on until the very last moment for someone he loves, or a girl like Mirabelle who has to make a choice to let go in order to be truly loved, this movie WILL move you. You cannot pass this one up. The score is also brilliant. There is not one bad thing I can say for this film. You won't be disappointed.
