Movie Reviews of Shootfighter Tekken - The Tough DVD Collection
Movie Review: Strong on fights, weak on just about everything else.
Summary: 3 Stars
The only people who could fully appreciate this short series, is those looking for a good fight only. That is the only area where Shootfighter shines. I didn't find the story or plot too interesting.
The main character Kiichi is a high school student being trained by his father in a deadly martial art. He later finds himself thrust into a feud that his father began by defeating a dangerous pro wrestler named Kiba. Kiba returns and vows to conquer this dangerous martial art by defeating Kiichi's father. He manipulates other wrestlers and grapplers to fight Kiichi.
Now, I know that I'm beating on a dead horse repeating the fights. But the fights are the biggest attraction. Most of them are capital "B" Brutal. They pull very little punches with the violence. The detailed grapple fights are well done and through some of the fights. You get to know the opponents drive. Which makes for some decent story telling. The last two episodes are by far the best.
The characters introduced are plenty. Outside the main characters, I didn't care for any of them and they were just there. The dialogue comes off funny and way too cheesy at times. The animation does a pretty good job with the detail in the fights. It's nothing great, only decent at best. The soundtrack is pretty good and fits very well with the fight scenes.
One of the biggest problems I have is in the writing. The amount of time Kiichi has spent training is never discussed. The training sessions for his battles were too unrealistic and he won against opponents that should have destroyed him. The martial art he practices is suppose to be invincible. Too many times it didn't look it.
I recommend ShootFighter Tekken to those who ran out of things to watch. This should be one of the last series on your list. At only three episodes, 45 minutes each. The little bit it has to offer just doesn't seem worth it.
