Movie Reviews of Shirley ValentineMovie Review: Finally on DVD in the US with original UK English! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been waiting years for this to finally make it to DVD, and it's well worth the wait! There are no 'extras' to speak of, but I'm pleased to finally have the opportunity to view the film with the original British English intact. I never really understood why they changed certain words and not others. They did miss one, however... when young Shirley is talking to her friends about how boring her Science lesson was, she refers to a film of 2 rabbits having a "sc**w" as opposed to a "shag", which is what her lips are saying. Ironic, as that's become a more common word in the US, thanks in large part to the Austin Powers films. In any case, the film also comes in US English, as it was originally released on VHS years ago, which is fun, because that's how I remember first seeing it.
It's also great to see Joanna Lumley make a brief appearance, pre "AbFab"!
If you haven't seen this film, it's a treat, and the price is certainly reasonable, so buy it!
Movie Review: At Last!! Summary: 5 Stars
At last this amazing movie will be available on DVD. I thought it wasn't going to happen and I had almost worn out my VHS copy, so I bought a second VHS because I couldn't bear to think of life without Shirley. Oh, how we'd all love to be the girl who used to be us, and Shirley, after many years, picks up her courage and does just that. Pauline Collins deserved an Oscar for her portrayal, but Hollywood doesn't work that way, so she was pushed aside. Practically no one had heard of the movie, so I rented it and it has been my favorite ever since. I recommended it to all my friends who had just passed the 40 year mark and they all loved it as much as I did. And who wouldn't fall for Tom Conti, the mischievous Greek who helps Shirley find out who she still is. Many years have passed, but I still dream of sitting by the sea, watching the sunset, drinking wine in a land where the grapes are grown.
Movie Review: Great Movie! Summary: 5 Stars
"Shirley Valentine" is to your movie collection what tylenol is to your medicine cabinet. You must own it. It is a "feel good" movie, and I always sigh with contentment and nostalgia after viewing the movie. Pauline Collins, Tom Conti, and Joanna Lumley, all of the actors in this film do a tremendous job. It's a great movie for a woman who can relate to feeling like she has become part of the furniture, completely taken for granted, and as though after turning 40 a woman's life is "over".
What I appreciated most was Shirley's romance with Costas was not the focus of the film. Shirley learns to feel comfortable in her own skin again, and you're left feeling like everything will work out for the best.
What more can you ask for?!
Movie Review: Delight to the funny bone and the eyes Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderous comedic romp with Pauline Collins as a put-upon British housewife who's just had enough. Her husband barely notices her, her children take her services for granted and the rainy, English climate just gets to be too much.
Her salvation is a chance to go on a holiday with a girlfriend to Greece with all its spectacular scenery!
She tells her husband she's going, and though he protests (he really doesn't believe her), off she goes to the sun, sand and the azure waters of the Mediterranean! Her vacation winds up being even better than she dreamed and when the time comes, will she go back? Should she go back?
Watch and see & be delighted at the lovely ending...or is it a beginning?
Movie Review: Shirley Valentine Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is a wonderful suprise. It's about women who have lost their identity. We are someone's mother and someone's wife, but what happened to us, our hopes, our dreams. Shirley Valentine is about a woman who takes a chance by traveling to another country and discovering herself along the way.
The movie is funny with lots of British humor, the characters are people you know and it shows the Shirley she was, the Shirley she is and the Shirley she wants to be. It's a must have for any woman over 35 who feels old, dreams of running away from everyday life, work, children and what to fix for dinner again. I've bought multi copies for women in my family and friends.
