Movie Review: Shirley Valentine
Summary: 5 Stars

"Hiya Wall."

What happens when you've got no one to talk to; when everyone takes you for granted? You might start talking to inanimate objects, or you might decide to escape for a while . . . say, to Greece, perhaps?

Shirley Valentine takes a fairly mundane plotline - that of a lonely, underappreciated housewife - and weaves it into a story so full of humor and joie de vivre you'll be ready to pack your bags, too.

Originally a one-woman stage production, the screenplay was wonderfully adapted for the large screen. Pauline Collins stars as Shirley Valentine, a role she played in the original stage production as well.

Shirley Valentine-Bradshaw wonders what happened to the feisty young girl she used to be. Now an empty-nester housewife in Liverpool, she's stuck in a steak-on-Thursday rut. A series of closely spaced interactions that are out of her control act as a catalyst that allows Shirley to take back control of her own life.

The part of the film that takes place in Greece is, of course, magnificent. But much more than just the setting is how Shirley is transformed by the experience.

I first saw this film many years ago, and absolutely fell in love with it. A few years ago a local theater company produced the stage play, and I loved it so much I had to see it twice. It was fascinating to see the stage play, and compare that to the way the film was produced. I have even more admiration for the quirky film now, seeing how the writer and director were able to adapt it for the screen without losing the character of the stage production.

My husband finds it ironic that two of my favorite films (the other being American Dreamer) deal with the same theme - bored housewife takes a trip abroad & has life changing experience. Even more ironic is that Tom Conti plays a somewhat similar role in both films.

See this film! It's quirky cinema at its best.

Movie Review: Changed my life
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie changed my life! I was young and did what I thought I was expected to do, got married to a "nice, dependable guy" had a very good job but, I felt trapped and getting out of bed to fulfill that expected life was almost too much to handle. One day, this movie happened to come on and I watched it, just because I didn't have anything else to do. After I heard her say, "Why does God give us all of these feelings?....I've lived such a little life..." I determined it was time to make a change. I used to drive home from work and consider suicide. That was more than twenty years ago. I really needed to hear what Shirley had to say and I am amazed that a movie had such a powerful effect on my life.

This movie is WONDERFUL! Pauline Collins, Bernard Hill and Tom Conti are superb and give a depth to these characters that I can't imagine other actors approaching by half. The story is whimsical, wicked and heartbreaking at times. I think almost every woman and most men will be able to relate to this story. We all begin our adult lives with dreams, goals, and wishes. For most people, as life happens, we settle for what we have instead of what we really want. This story is about finally saying, I want more, I've done what's necessary, now it's my turn again.

Take the time to watch this movie, it will open your eyes to the life you still have. May you have joy!

Movie Review: WOW on DVD...Been waiting for this moment...One of my FAVORITE films
Summary: 5 Stars

What a great movie. This movie is so funny, I had seen it so many times that my VHS copy is so worn out that it is hard to watch. I have used so many of the quotes of this movie within many of my friends that like it as well- and we laugh and laugh. One really funny quote is of Shirley's friend,... they are having lunch together and she looks at Shirley and says, "All men are potential rapists!" and Shirley replies, "Even the Pope?"

Now that I had just turned 40 I can understand; REALLY understand a lot of Shirley's point of views in life at this age! I don't want to spoil it for people that have not seen it plus with the other reviews I'm sure you can tell what the movie is about. All I have to say is that you won't be disappointed with this gem of a film, it is well written, extremeley well acted, funny as ever and it crosses boundaries of what a lot of people would say is a "chic" flick. I think this movie in many ways will touch all walks of life and make you look at yourself and realize that you are NOT to old to change your life and you are NOT to old to have fun while doing it!

A great universal feel good movie for singles or couples that have been in long term relationships and perhaps had taken each other for granted.

Movie Review: A thoroughly enjoyable taste of Mykonos, Greece...but hold the retsina
Summary: 5 Stars

With 146 five star reviews ahead of mine, I don't think I can add much to convince anyone that this is an absolutely wonderful movie. In fact, I'm not going to try. Suffice it to say, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Shirley "grow back" from the mature, home-and-hearth-weary, 42-year-old British housewife she is to the young schoolgirl she once was without all the insecurity and self-consciousness that comes with adolescence. Too, we loved seeing the beautiful Greek isle of Mykonos and would love to be able to visit Greece one day. (I had spent one month in Glyfada, 40 minutes or so from Athens, a long time ago and this movie brought back memories of what I loved so much about Greece and its people at the time...except for the resinated Greek wine.)

It's refreshing to see adults acting like adults, even though they are actors following a script (and many scripts made for the BBC and other British Production Companies seem to be geared to the "mature" viewer), who don't talk down to the audience or spell everything out for the "slow-witted", assumed to be typically American.

I highly recommend this movie. I think Pauline Collins and Tom Conti were perfect together as Shirley and Costas.

Movie Review: SHIRLEY VALENTINE TOP OF THE CLASS
Summary: 5 Stars

SHIRLEY VALENTINE is a winner!I have owned this film for many years on VHS, and wore it out. I was delighted to see that the DVD was available. Not only does this movie speak to all women, who find their lives have not turned out as they might have wished for, but to men as well. I would suggest all couples engaged to be married, watch this film.

When Shirley takes her Greek holiday, and "finds herself", and the life she saw passsing her by, it is a rare and beautiful moment to be a part of. Miss Collins is a wonderful actress, and this part is ALL HERS. I've seen the stage play, and my Shirley was missing. There is just one Scarlett O'Hara, one Margo Channing, and for me there is only one Shirley Valentine.

At the end of the movie, by the edge of the sea, you just know that Shirley and her "fella" will see each other with a new understanding and hope for the future together. You will laugh, and you will most surely cry. Most of all, you will say, BRILLIANT.
