Movie Reviews of ShenandoahMovie Review: THE NOT SO CIVIL WAR Summary: 4 Stars
This heartfelt, if somewhat maudlin, film marks its 40th anniversary this year, and for what the movie wanted to do, SHENANDOAH is a well made film about family, and how involvement in the senseless Civil War brings both tragedy and hope. James Stewart leads the cast with his typically professional and underplayed performance. A honor roll of great character actors support him and one has to wonder what happened to a lot of these guys: Rosemary Forsyth, Phillip Alford (who was so good in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD), James Best, Charles Robinson, Tom Simcox, Tim McIntire, Glenn Corbett, etc. Also around are Doug McClure (The Virginian) and Katharine Ross (The Graduate). The director is longtime western director Andrew McLaglen, who keeps focus on what the war is doing to the family, rather than a historic epic. A good film for the family to ponder over.
Movie Review: "This war is not mine and I don't take note of it." Summary: 4 Stars
Despite the goofs (power lines visible, rubber bayonet) the historical inaccuracies (using rifle not yet invented, I doubt you could refuse to join the Confederate army) and the unbelievable script I enjoyed this movie mainly because I've always liked Jimmy Stewart.
Widower Stewart and his children operate a large farm in Virginia. The War looms all around but Stewart refuses to take part in it. When his youngest son is mistaken for a Reb and captured by the Yankees Stewart is forced to take action.
A fun watch thanks to Stewart's powerful performance and the impressive supporting cast - Strother Martin, Denver Pyle, James Best and George Kennedy - but other than that I'd suggest watching WINCHESTER `73 instead if you want to see a good Stewart western.
Movie Review: It's about family more than history... Summary: 4 Stars
This is a wonderful movie I have enjoyed since I was a young woman. Yes, there are some glaring historical inaccuracies - name one "historical" movie made during the same time period that didn't have any - but the movie is about more than just history. It's about the love that family members feel for each other and what they are willing to go through to be reunited once they are separated. It's about a man who desperately wants to protect his family from the horror and the pain of a war he does not believe in and feels he has no stake in. It is an emotional movie, and at times, a real tear jerker, but it's supposed to be. Pop the popcorn, break out the Kleenex and enjoy!!
Movie Review: Classic James Stewart Summary: 4 Stars
This is a classic civil war era movie wioth some great actors and a pretty good script. Leaving a son and daughter-in-law with a new baby alone with all the bad guys in the area, while you take all the rest of the men hunting for a lost younger son, is a little bit unbelieveable but I guess that's how they write them. I think the Ranchers take on who provided for their success in farming is very indicative of out humanist society. God is given a backup role in their success. All in all, this was an entertaining movie.
Movie Review: Shenandoah Summary: 4 Stars
Good movie as are most movies with James Stewart. I was watching it mainly to get a better understanding of some of the attitudes of people during the Civil War. It certainly gave me that although I am not sure I would rate it in the top 10 of the movies about people caught up in this War as some others have.
