Movie Reviews of ShenandoahMovie Review: Wrenches the heart Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw the movie in my English 10 Honors class in high school. We were supposed to look for allusions, allegories, irony, and metaphors within the movie. I was prepared for a boring old western (even though it was a Jimmy movie). I was surprised but pleased about how poignant and mature the movie was. The acting, for the most part, was very effective; the family's initial happiness and the tragedies they go through are played out perfectly with heart-wrenching emotion. I am not a big fan of "old movies" or "classics," because sometimes I find them superficial or overacted. Shenandoah effectively battles those annoyances of mine with its mature themes and honesty. The movie is funny, sad, nostalgic, simple, and complex, but any emotion you're going to feel will be geared toward the characters, not the movie itself. That's the power of a true "classic." Also, the music is just beautiful.
Movie Review: Underappreciated classic Summary: 5 Stars
Is it indeed possible to remain neutral in a world that demands we take sides? The Jimmy Stewart character in this movie attempts to do just that and in the end pays the same price as if he had chosen sides. Perhaps the cost is the same whether we choose or not. Or, perhaps the moral cost is greater when choosing sides. Is it better, after all, to choose the lesser of two evils? As many reviewers have already noted, this is not Mr. Stewart's best but the questions it raises about the relative morality of war and our obligation to the state are interesting ones indeed. Mr. Stewart takes the libertarian road less traveled until circumstances force his intervention. And perhaps that is why, despite lacklustre reviews, this movie remains a classic for so many.
Movie Review: My 15 year old Newphew's Favorite Movie - Shenandoah Summary: 5 Stars
My 15 year old Nephew recently spent several weeks with his Grandmother. He watched the Western Channel on cable TV, because that was what she wanted to watch. When my Grandson and I took him home, he said to my Grandson:"Dude have you ever seen the movie Shenandoah? It is the best movie I have ever seen. This guy has seven sons and they are fighting against the North and the South during the Civil War"! "I never watched many westerns until I spent time with Grandma and some are pretty cool". So, I had to buy him his own copy. My sister told me he made her watch it with him when he received it. She said he kept saying, "ooh this is a really cool part, watch this Mom".
Movie Review: Limited Government Summary: 5 Stars
This is a film that is basically about the evils of abolishing limited government. The message is clear. Whenever the main character walks outside of his self-sufficient context and begins to rely on big government he is stabbed in the back. Eventually he loses two sons in the story because he is cornered into taking sides in the civil war, which he vowed not to get involved in. Libertarians will like this film. Conservatives will likely be intrigued and provoked into thinking about what has happened in our country.
