Movie Reviews of She's Having a Baby

Movie Review: I stand outside this womans work.
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie was a favorite of mine as a teen, and I haven't watched it since then ...although I did listen to the soundtrack till it fell apart. John Hughes is well known for his teenage films. The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Buellers day off, Weird Science. Its his "adult" films like Planes, Trains Automobiles and She's Having a Baby that don't get a lot of recognition for their unique brilliance.

I happen to LOVE Kevin Bacon, yes he has gotten a reputation of being the foundation of a certain game, and he just shot a commercial making fun of himself, but the man is a great actor. Elizabeth McGovern plays "Kristi", wife to Bacons "Jefferson". Teenage sweethearts, turned reluctant newlyweds (on his part), turned rats in the maze of life. You don't get that they are so much in love, with the arguing and not communicating. Jefferson, or Jake as he is called, has fantasies and visions and it's never in a positive light unless it includes a foreign woman coming onto him. He feels stuck in the marriage, stuck in his job, stuck in suburbia hell. His parents and In laws don't exactly think he is prime husband or potential awesome father material BUT they are wondering where that fat toddling grandkid is!! Alec Baldwin plays Jakes best friend Davis and really, his chest hair steals the show as well as the usual Baldwin "a-hole" womanizing stereotype.

It isn't until the last part of the movie, when "She" IS having a baby, do we get to see them all grow in love and realization that you can lose so much more than you ever realized and you better stop being so distant and cynical and selfish and appreciate what is right before your eyes before its too late. Life isn't about where you work, or what lawnmower you own, or what you're missing out on , its about love and family and seeking happiness in everyday miracles. Watching it as an adult I can appreciate this movie so much more. rewatch it if you havent for awhile, or watch it for the first time. Its a good one.

Movie Review: The Married Life
Summary: 4 Stars

She's Having A Baby was director John Hughes' first attempt an "adult" comedy. Although he was the screenwriter on several movies that concentrated on adults, he had only directed the Brat Pack classics that focused on teenage life. The movie is told from the point of view (and narrated) by Jake Briggs who is charmingly played by Kevin Bacon. He is a would be writer who seems to get stuck in a life and career that he's not sure he wants. The film starts off with his marriage to Christie and follows them through the travails of married life and the fact that we all have to grow up and take on the responsibilities of adulthood. Christie is played delightfully by Elizabeth McGovern. She adds the right amount of compassion and caring to role. Jake's best friend Davis (played by Alec Baldwin) is still living the wild life and he tries to convince Jake that Christie is holding him back. In the end, Jake realizes that the life he has is special and that his wife and new baby are more important than anything else. The film contains alot funny site gags, like a lawn mower ballet dream sequence and the leads make a believable couple. The birth sequence near the end is a way too melodramatic and shamelessly tries to pull at your heartstrings. Overall, it is a very enjoyable and funny movie.

Movie Review: Zany Fun
Summary: 4 Stars

This story follows two young people who get married and whose lives do not go as they planned. They had great plans but find themselves in the "real" grind of life trying to make a living. He wants to be a great writer but has had to settle for a job writing ad copy. They also have to deal with in laws who prove to be a sore trial. He is worried about making ends meet and she is worried about having a baby.

Many of the situations depicted in this film are only mildly laughable in and of themselves. What makes this film fun is the way they are depicted from the point of view of the man with a lot of imagination thrown in for good measure. What is shown on the screen is not what happens but what he daydreams/has nightmares about. Sometimes this is as subtle as rearranged marriage vows and sometimes it is an over the top musical song and dance number with the neighborhood lawn mowers.

This is not art, it is just fun.

Movie Review: If for no other reason...
Summary: 4 Stars

*Spoiler Notice*
Okay, so maybe the movie was a little quirky, but this was the eighties folks. The thing about this movie on a VERY personal level is that I gave birth to our daughter in 1988 & my husband (at the wise old age of nineteen, mind you) got to experience the feeling of watching me start to hemorrhage and be shuffled out of the delivery room with no explanation other than "There was a complication." The thing is, while everything around me was in complete crisis, I kept hearing "Woman's Work" & didn't have the fear that everyone around me did, I felt calm and reassured. The sound of Kate Bush is always welcome, but at a time like that, it's an absolute gift from the heavens & after several blood transfusions, I got to see my little gift from the heavens - who is now 16! So, watch the movie for all of it, but remember that that situation can become very real, very quickly & the movie portrayed it beautifully.

Movie Review: A widely overlooked John Hughes classic
Summary: 4 Stars

For any fans of John Hughes, this is a must for the collection. This is a wonderful, heart-warming film. Guys should not be swayed by the title - this is NOT a chick flick. The story goes to the heart of what many men go through with their first (and sometimes only) child. Just a wonderfully written and acted movie. Kevin and Elizabeth were perfectly cast in this film. Enjoy.
