Movie Reviews of Shallow HalMovie Review: Paltrow Shines in Big-Hearted 'Hal' Summary: 5 Stars
I'm surprised about the controversy this has film received since its November 2001 release. SHALLOW HAL is anything but shallow. If you like the Farrelly Bros. past comedy THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, you will enjoy SHALLOW HAL. If you didn't like it, you will still enjoy SHALLOW HAL. 'HAL' has a message that not everyone can see. Some people seem blinded and can't see the message because a few fat-jokes have stomped it down a little. But, more people find it big-hearted and moral than those find it offensive and stupid. Hopefully, you'll see the message that you shouldn't judge people on physical appearance, and that beauty is really in the eye of the beholder...especially in Hal's case. Gwyneth Paltrow is amazing and truly shines in the film. The amazing thing about her is that she really doesn't differenciate between thin Rosemary and overweight Rosemary (Gwyneth in a fat-suit). Though there's about three fat jokes that are played for innocent laughs, other events related to overweight are merely there to show some of the hard things and sometimes embarrassing moments, and hurtful comments, that some overweight people have to go through. The DVD is full of amazing features, including 11 deleted scenes and three film specials. SHALLOW HAL is definitely a must see, and it really made me think about the next time I act a little shallow. You feel Rosemary's hurt sometimes throughout the film, but the heart is big as well as the laughs, and I think you should see the film, if you're deep enough.
Movie Review: Heartwarming Summary: 5 Stars
Hal is told never to settle for second best by his heavily sedated father who is on his deathdbed. His father (a preacher) then goes on to describe his idea of the physically perfect woman. After receiving this twisted message about women, flash forward 20 years. Hal is a shallow jerk cruising the nightclubs to find that perfect physical specimen his father described. Fortunately for him, he gets trapped in an elevator with self-help guru, Tony Robbins. Robbins is able to get Hal to see the inner beauty of the people he meets. After this life-changing experience, he meets Rosemary, the girl of his dreams. Most of the comedy in this movie comes from the difference between Hal's view of people and the reality. For example, the very fit Gwyneth Paltrow causes a monster tidal wave after doing a cannonball. Well, I think you get the idea. Many people criticize this movie because they believe it makes fun of overweight and disabled people. On the contrary, this movie has a really warm heart. The humor isn't malicious. The overweight and disabled are treated no differently than the other people in this movie. The Farrelly Brothers show more heart toward the disabled than the rest of Hollywood. Hollywood likes to pretend that there aren't any disabled people in the world. Without the work of the Farrelly Brothers, there would be very few opportunities to see the disabled as normal people in the movies.
Movie Review: Histarical! Summary: 5 Stars
The Farrelly Brothers have done it again!! All there movie are so funny. Shallow Hal, though not as funny as Dumb & Dumber, was extremely funny. Jack Black does a great job as Hal and Gwyneth Paltrow does an awesome job as 300 pound Rosemary. This movie is filled with genuine laughs.Shallow Hal starts off when Hal is a little kid and his mom and him are in the hospital because Hal's father is dying. Hal is the only one that witnesses his fathers death. Then the movie goes to the older Hal dancing at a club, trying to get women bt he's just to shallow. A little bit later he gets stuck in an elevator with this therapist guy who puts a spell on Hal that makes him less shallow by letting him only see the inner beauty of someone. right when he leaves he gets in a cab with this pretty woman who actually talks to him. He asks her if shes here for a model show and she starts laughing and is like "Yeah Right". He gets her number and hes happy. The next day he sees this beautiful woman who is pretty skinny walking into a store and he follows her. He finds her looking at oversized clothes and he cracks the joke "Are you going to make a parachute with them" and she gets angry and upset and she walks away. He then apologizes and he takes her out to lunch. The movie continues on Hals and Rosemary's trials and tribulations. I dont want to give away anymore becuase film is histarical!! I couldn't stop laughing! Thanks
Movie Review: This is really something. Now this flick is quality!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Once this DVD comes out, I will get it as soon as possible because this movie is such a treat to watch. Funny as heck and will be added with pleasure to my collection at home. I remember watching this movie at a dollar theatre or as some of you might know as those theatres that play older movies that are about to be released on tape or dvd. Well I gotta tell you that it was worth more than a dollar to watch. If I paid 50 bucks to watch this flick I wouldn't even care. it's that good!!! It is those types of movies that you will watch over and over and over again till your eyeballs can't take it anymore. that is why the five star rating is in effect. It deserves this much even more (i know it's being cliche but it does deserve that extra added 6 stars). Great movie! The story is great and well thought of, the romance between Jack Black and Gweneth is great chemistry. The comedic performances is top notch. This blows Something about Mary" out of the water. After watching the movie it really made me think that woman are pretty in the inside. It would help if I had Hal's power. But you know what I mean. Once again great flick. I want more comedy movies to be like this one. I listened to it 17 times in a row the other day. Put it on repeat and listened to it for 85 minutes since the tune is 5 min long. I liked it so much that i learned the lyrics to it. Just download the lyrics at that lyrics.com site.
Movie Review: Shallow Hal Shines! Summary: 5 Stars
Be prepared . . . this IS a controversial film! Why? The film confronts touchy, personal topics such as being overweight and not being beautiful. It also confronts the topics of being supermodel thin and being incredibly beautiful. Most people don't fall into the Gwyneth Paltrow-looking category, so some may feel uncomfortable, especially if insecure about their own appearance. In short, I firmly believe that Shallow Hal is not aimed at poking fun at the unattractive or the obese. Instead, it bravely attempts to showcase certain issues, while giving it a comedic twist to ease any uncomfortable sentiments by viewers. Hal is superficial (and note, he himself isn't considered to be attractive by the script), and he centers his actions and even his life around dating beautiful women. When he is hypnotized, Hal starts to only see the inner beauty of women. Thus, when 350 lbs Rosemary, a geniune, caring, and giving woman, crosses Hal's path, he now sees a beautiful Gwyneth Paltrow. A love interest pursues . . . Overall, the film conveys some wonderful themes and moral messages about inner beauty, the true beauty. Some may be disappointed that this film doesn't include the gross humor of There's Something About Mary, but this film is different. Believe it or not, it's a serious flick with serious issues. Go see it today and make your own opinion. :-)
