Movie Reviews of ShagMovie Review: Great beach music on VHS Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great movie but beware the differences in the soundtrack of the VHS, DVD, and CD Soundtrack>
While many of these tunes are from the 1963 era of the movie, they were popular in the late 70s at fraternity parties at the U. of Tenn. (and many other Southern schools). In fact, the band in the movie: Big Dan and the Sand Dollars is played by the Voltage Bros., who played at our Sigma Chi formal one year.
Some great lines from the movie:
When the black maid catches two couples (who are not "supposed" to be coupled) kissing, she exclaims "Y'all is the horniest bunch of white folks I ever seen!"
When Bridget Fonda's character snuggles up to a guy in the dance club, he says, "Where have I seen you before?" and she responds "Maybe in one of your better dreams!".
As others have noted, there are several versions of the soundtrack on the VHS, DVD and CD soundtrack. Here's what's on my VHS version, the one with large photos of Phoebe and Bridget on the front cover (not the cast in the car); these are not in chron. order:
* Momma said there'd be days like this - Shirelles
* Stay - M. Williams & Zodiacs
* Monkey Time - Major Lance
* Ooh Aah - Jakki 0
* It will stand - The Showmen (played several times in movie; some by the "house" band Big Dan and the Sand Dollars
* Stagger Lee - Lloyd Price? or tbd.
* Easier said than done - The Essex
* Baby work it out - Jackie Wilson
* Since I don't have you - the Skyliners
* Sixty-Minute Man - Billy Ward (and the Dominos?) "sung" by house band in the movie.
* Another Sat. Night - Sam Cooke
* He's so fine - Chiffons ?
* 39-21-40 Shape - Showmen
* Up on the roof & Under the Boardwalk - Drifters
* Blue Hawaii - Elvis
* He's the one (easier said than done) - TBD
* Alley Oop -- tbd
* You belong to me -- Tbd
Movie Review: NO SELF-RESPECTING SOUTHERNER SHOULD BE WITHOUT IT Summary: 5 Stars
Ah, Shag! This is one of my favorite movies for so many reasons. The movie is definitely lightweight, but also very memorable. The perfect casting had one thing to do with that. Everyone in this movie, down to the late Carrie Hamilton, is made-to-order. The "Southern" details of this movie are also dead-on. As a North Carolinian who's spent a heck of a lot of time in Myrtle Beach (though in the '90s, not in the '60s) the accents, expressions, music, and clothes are all correct for the time and place. The story is simple, but most great movies have simple plots when you get right down to it. What makes Shag shine is great acting, fantastic period details, and quotable dialogue. Watch this movie with another Southerner or anybody else who could appreciate the humor and the fun of this great movie. Whether it's your first time or your 100th time watching it, Shag is absolutely the "most fun"! By the way, though this is not the original motion picture soundtrack, it's still pretty darn good. For those of you who didn't see the early VHS version of the movie, let me explain: some of the songs were in the original version of the movie and are still in this version; others were added later. The original movie soundtrack, which I still have, contains new versions of old songs, plus a couple of original ones. I don't know why it was changed, but I'd sure like to have a copy of the DVD with the original soundtrack, which includes songs by K.D Lang and Randy Newman, to name a few.
Movie Review: Shag this great film Summary: 5 Stars
Hello
I wrote a review on here in February of 2001. Well I want to say this as I sit here December 6th 2005 in Jacksonville NC. This movie is the reason why I'am. You see I saw this movie when I was 12, always through the years wanted to got to Myrtle Beach, finally made my way to Myrtle Beach in 2003, the man of my dreams brought me there and I now live in North Carolina with my husband and beautiful daughter. If it were not for this movie I would not be where I'am today, that is not lie.This movie is great. I read the review listed here. Amazon should be ashamed to have it there, it is not even accurate. Anyway this film inspires 4 young woman in 1963 to find themselves. The setting is Myrtle Beach and the woman have a great last weekend together. This is the ultimate chick flick!!! This movie is the only movie that I can put on and it takes me away to the time when I can be any age I want and remember my life. Enjoy this flick. It is a great treasure in film, I say this objectively as a screen writer. Thank you Zelda Barron for making this possible..lol..Enjoy.
Movie Review: Fianlly, on DVD!! I want my own Chip!! Summary: 5 Stars
Like many here, I found the transfer of this movie to VHS to be awful (grainy,bad color). Thus, the DVD is a relief--crisp picture, letterbox format, just like in a theater! The music on the soundtrack is the same that I've always remembered (Stagger Lee, Alley Oop, It Will Stand, etc.), so those who say it had different music, please e-mail me and tell me what it was. The music now is so perfect for the film, I can't imagine anything else! Thew film itself is a delight, a great "summer film." If you have girlfriends, definitely gather them up to watch it on a summer night. The performances are great (esp. by Phoebe Cates and Annabeth Gish), and my first great crush was Scott Coffey as the sweet Chip. (BTW--My God, is Robert Rustler (Buzz) tan in this film, freakishly so. When Buzz goes off to Yale, he'll either have to pale out or buy some sun lamps to stay that red!) This film is a must see for anyone who enjoyed "Mystic Pizza," "Dirty Dancing" or "Footloose." Watch it soon! ("It's the most fun!")
Movie Review: A Feel Good Summer Beach Movie You Have To Own!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Take it from this girl, who grew up in South Carolina and I still live in South Carolina.......this is one of the BEST "Feel Good, Fun-Loving Summer Beach Movies" that you just HAVE TO OWN!!!! The music is great, the characters are great; it will have you laughing from the start!!! I live in the Upstate of SC, so I'm about 5-hours from Myrtle Beach, but I was in High School and was in Myrtle Beach with my cousin & her Family when this Movie came out on the Big Screen and we all went to see it! I was hooked from the start!!!! I own it on VHS & DVD! Now, my daughter watches it all the time and loves it too! And if you've ever been to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.....you need to buy this movie, because it will bring back so many memories.....even true for Modern Day Myrtle Beach! They still have the Sun Fun Festival, The Grand Strand, etc!!! Take my advice, you can't go wrong with this movie! So, if I were you, I would get "SHAG" as soon as possibe....and remember....."Now Y'all, We Can Have A Good Time, BUT....We Can Not Be Wild!" :-)
