Movie Reviews of Shadows and Fog

Movie Review: A movie about vision
Summary: 3 Stars

If you say this movie is about existence or non-existence, I would rather suggest that is more about vision - how we see and what we see. Everything in Shadows and Fog is blurred, or illusioned. The make-up, costumes and wig of the clown and sword-swallower, the mirror of the magician, or even the foggy setting is all planned to convey the message of unclear vision. The star gives out light not because it exists, yey it died a million years ago but it reflected light from another source. I am not too sure how much this movie can be associated with German Expressionism, apart from a few allusions to Franz Kafka and Bruno Schulz, but I hope the three-star rating I have given here is a true image.

Movie Review: Shadows and Fog DVD
Summary: 3 Stars

Seller gave me superb and speedy service! This movie is deliberately both suspenseful and very depressing. Rating: aces to seller, a couple of stars to the film.

Movie Review: Not funny, not clever, not even interesting...unless you find fog entertaining
Summary: 1 Stars

You'd think that with all the luminaries Woody Allen somehow convinced to appear in this movie, you'd see some good acting. But an actor is only as good as his script, and Woody Allen can't write one. Most of Shadows and Fog has the feel of an awkwardly improvised skit. The actors didn't seem to know what they were doing, and neither did the camera. (There was one long endless pan of prostitutes eating stew that seemed to last for centuries.) The dialogue was stiff and so hopelessly repetitive that the actors had nothing to work with. (How many times can you say, "It sure is foggy tonight"?) And the casting decisions must have been made by hungover frat boys randomly shooting darts at a list of names. John Cusack playing someone who needs to go to a brothel? Get serious. Lily Tomlin, Jodie Foster, and ... are you ready? ... MADONNA playing bit parts? And what was up with John Malkovich??? The man is about as funny as a brick. (I have suspected for quite some time that John Malkovich is actually an alien. He delivers lines as if his native language was Martian.) The only bright spot in this dull, dreary film was the all too brief scene featuring Julie Kavnor, who could make a telephone directory sound hilarious. Frankly, a telephone directory would have been a welcome addition to the script...

Movie Review: Really wretched - Woody Allen is definitely not K...
Summary: 1 Stars

Well, it took me 17 years to work up the courage to watch this & now I'm glad it's over & I'll never have to go through that again. What was W.A. thinking? Is this supposed to be an homage to Bergman or Lang? A pastiche? The acting, to start with, is perfunctory as a high school drama club rehearsal, as though all his big name guest stars, from Madonna to Malkovitch, Cusack to Tomlin, came by to do a reading with no prepping or coaching from Mr. Schtick. The only scene that carries a glimmer of the possibility of what might have been is an autopsy with Donald Pleasance. Pleasance & Allen are truly an example of the sublime & the ridiculous.

The writing is *adolescent reads Kafka & adds some Catskill humor*.

It's all just to embarrassingly bad to warrant further consideration.

One of the worst films I've ver had to endure.

Movie Review: Woody's Big Fall
Summary: 1 Stars

Easily one of my top five favourite directors, Woody has never ceased to surprise & stimulate me, be it comically or emotionally. But here, with the exception of his trademark nervous, manic, neurotic that I always love to watch, he falls way too short. Lily Tomlin, Jodie Foster & Kathy Bates all deliver the most dreadful caricatures of prostitutes. Madonna is, well Madonna. John Malkovich is his usual pretentious self. John Cusack is wasted. The only bright spots are the always reliable Donald Pleasance & Julie Kavner, both who exit way too early. An interesting enough story but with way too many holes & nonsensical scenes of forced hilarity. Watch closely for an early William H.Macy as a policeman.
