Movie Reviews of ShadowlandsMovie Review: WARNING:Serious tear jerker Summary: 5 Stars
This is the saddest movie I have ever seen. It is also the best "thoughtful chick flick" on the planet. As rabid Inklings fans who happened to be American women we were eager to see our heroine portrayed. After seeing it at the theatre my galpal and I went from the cineplex, weeping so much that we could hardly drive, pulled into a nearby gas station, bought a box of chocolate donuts, cried until we had eaten them. The chocolate sustained us long enough to get home where, for hours, we re hashed the beauty and cruelty of life. A wonderful film especially if you need a good cry.
Movie Review: a masterpiece... Summary: 5 Stars
I can say unequivocally that this is my favorite movie of it's type. It is not a documentary nor is it intended to be. It is a drama loosely based (Douglas Grisham's words) on a small window of CS Lewis' life. Although CS Lewis was indeed a committed Christian, the film chose not focus on that very important aspect of his life. It is, rather, a story of two extraordinarily different people falling in love and the price that is almost always paid when hearts are completely opened. Whether you are a Christian or not, this movie will entertain and move you.
Movie Review: A splendid movie in authentically splendid settings Summary: 5 Stars
Others can debate the merits of 'Shadowlands' as cinema (I thought it was one of the best movies I've ever seen), but one little noticed aspect of the film is the tremendous authenticity of the choral music that forms the backdrop of the first half of the movie. The producers went to the trouble of filming scenes in the chapel of Lewis' Magdalene College, Oxford, and used the chapel choir, directed by the real choir director. A small footnote to the movie, but to those who'd know the difference, it's a terrific treat. Bravo.
Movie Review: Excellent portrayal, fine acting, and wonderful story Summary: 5 Stars
This film has all the elements that make it a classic. Anthony Hopkins is in fine form as the late apologist C.S. Lewis. Debra Winger plays the spry, and smart New Yorker Joy Davidman very well. The film will yank the heartstrings and jerk out those tears. As a fan of Lewis, this film makes his life more real to me, and his writing more profound. Be sure to read "A Grief Observed" after you see this movie--for Lewis's pain is as great as any, and he expresses it better than most.
Movie Review: I bought it for my wife. Really. I'm serious. Summary: 5 Stars
Anthony Hopkins does an amazing job portraying the story of C.S. Lewis and Joy Gresham, and how waiting on love is the most foolish of self denials.I bought this DVD for my wife. The transfer is pretty good, and the sound is well done. The camera work really showcases the scenery well, and picks up on the ambiance the directer wanted. And, after all that drivel, I must admit, I just *LIKED* it. I don't like this kind of film, but it was **GOOD**. Don't tell my wife.
