Movie Reviews of Shadowlands

Movie Review: Sunday night sob-fest.
Summary: 5 Stars

Although this is the 126th review of this fine film, please don't mistake my review title as a criticism of the film. As other reviewers here have said, this is a rare movie that REALLY tells it like it is re: what constitutes real, living, loving relationships and what they give and take from us. I can only repeat the movie's closing line: "The pain now is part of the happiness then. That's the deal." That says more than just about any multi-hundred paged book ever could. Hopkins and Winger and even the young lad all played their roles to perfection. A great movie, but don't ferget yer hankies! (Fellas, save this one for Valentine's Day or your wedding anniversary, you generate bookoo kisses from yer lady!!!)AND WHY IS THIS OOP ON DVD!!! WRONG!!!!! (I have a VHS copy I bought years ago. I have to get a used DVD 'cos if the tape should break or wear out,I'd be outta luck.)

Movie Review: Does God want us to suffer? Answers to be found in this movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an incredibly moving movie, the true life story of C S Lewis. It is a tear-jerker that answers deep questions about the meaning of life, love and suffering. Anthony Hopkins plays the role of C S Lewis perfectly, illuminating the admiration I already had for him as a writer, especially after reading Mere Christianity. He was a true gentleman, and this drama defines that through his gentleness, sacrificial giving and the great love that he himself didn't realize he possessed until faced with the deep sorrows he experienced first as a child, and then as a man.
This is one of my favorite true life stories based on the the richness and depth of the story that causes us to pause and think about the true meaning of our relationships, the true meaning of living life through all of its sorrows. Don't watch this to be entertained. Watch it for the experience.

Movie Review: A movie catharsis....
Summary: 5 Stars

Only 2 movies I have seen in my life have made me cry out loud. This was one of them. This is the ONLY movie I have ever seen whose lesson has not left me, even after several years. "The pain now is part of the happiness then. That's the deal". An incredibly profound concept, but so true. No wonder Lewis said of her that she represented to him the whole world in a single mind. The lesson of this film is mind-blowing for anyone who has ever tried to shield himself from the prospect of pain that comes with just living and engaging in human relationships.

Hopkins completely disappears into the role. It is probably the finest acting performance I have ever seen from anyone in any film.

This is one of those films that belongs on the bookshelf at home, right alongside "Mere Christianity".

Movie Review: Best emotional scene in all of cinema
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie simply sparkles. Although I've never really liked Debra Winger in her movie roles, she brought a refreshing sense of realism to her role of Joy in this film. The tour de force, however, belongs to Anthony Hopkins. We understand all his detachments and his eventual great emotional entanglements that allow him to finally live a life that had been held at arms length before.
One of the last scenes in which C.S. Lewis sits upstairs with his step-son trying to piece together the effects of Joy's death cuts me to the heart every time I see it. Anthony Hopkins is so genuine and finally lets that emotional dam break in a most believable while still subtle way. I treasure this movie and only wish it had received more acclaim in theaters. It is a jewel to add to your home collection. I highly recommend it.

Movie Review: Great drama and romance. A very psychological movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I want to say something a bit different about this movie than some of the other reviews. Clearly, Winger and Hopkins hit a grand slam as character actors and the plot is good as so many reviewers have pointed out.

The romance is touching, but I was most impacted by the psychological transformation of Hopkins due to his wife's fatal illness. There is an integration of many disowned aspects of Hopkins' character that unfolds beautifully through the movie and demonstrates his incredible acting ability.

While the movie is tragic, it reflects the human condition and the individual's struggle with existential questions such as mortality and meaning. While this is a great drama and romance, it is a deep movie with many hooks on a variety of levels.
