Movie Reviews of Sex, Lies, and Videotape

Movie Review: I enjoyed it while I was watching it but...
Summary: 3 Stars

The lives of John (Peter Gallagher) and Ann (Andie MacDowell), a young married couple, and Ann's sister, Cynthia (Laura San Giacomo), are forever changed when John's school friend, Graham (James Spader), an impotent man who gets off by video taping women talking about sex, comes to visit.

I really enjoyed watching "Sex, Lies and Videotape" while I was watching it. I sat down with the intention of only watching the first half hour and ended up watching it all in one sitting because I just couldn't bring myself to press stop. I really wanted to know what would happen next, particularly as the film neared its end, and I really enjoyed watching all of the actors involved, who are all excellent, but especially James Spader, who is wonderfully creepy, and Andie MacDowell (whom I usually dislike intensely), as the "nice" sister. However, although all of the individual scenes within the film were brilliant, when I got to the end, I just felt that the whole film was rather pointless and I ended up walking away feeling disappointed. For me, the ending just wasn't strong enough to live up to the promise of the earlier scenes. The revelations weren't big enough, and the ending wasn't final enough.

I am glad that I saw this film, as I have wondered about it for as long as I can remember, and I would probably watch it again, just to see James Spader, but I don't think it's as great a film as other critics would have you believe.

Movie Review: This was definitely something different...
Summary: 3 Stars

Although this film is low budget and somewhat outdated, it is still intriguing and captures the attention of the viewer. Despite being slow in some spots, it has a great deal of depth and feeling to it and provokes a lot of thought.

The story revolves around an uptight woman named Ann, whose husband is cheating on her with her own sister. When one of the husband's old college friends, Graham (James Spader), comes into the picture, he gets mixed up in the scenario and finds out information that he really shouldn't know. Because he is impotent, Graham can only find sexual pleaure through taping women talking about their sexual experiences. When he interviews Ann's sister, Cynthia, she reveals information about the affair. I won't talk about what happens after that, to avoid spoiling the movie.

I wasn't too impressed by the acting in this film. With the exception of James Spader, the cast was nothing spectacular. Spader's performace as Graham was terrific, as are all of his performances, and he is the reason why this film worked. His character is pathetically vulnerable and he does a fantastic job with the role.

Overall, I would recommend this film as something to check out. You probably won't be blown away, but it may make you think about your personal feelings and relationships in a new way.

Movie Review: Mediocre storyline; overrated film
Summary: 3 Stars

When this film was released to cable television, I was in my late twenties in graduate school, and EVERYONE--student and adults alike--were talking about it as the most amazing film! So, I saw it, and frankly, even at that time, I felt it was overrated. Plot is nothing new, not even when it was released. All the characters are living unfulfilled lives full of lies and deceit of others and/or self. Not new. (Ever seen Gone with the Wind--made in 1937?) I think it got a great deal of attention because it was an indie talking about sex which made it to mainstream television via cable! (which itself was quite new at the time). I love almost anything with James Spader, and his Graham is a cross between creepy and seductive, depending on who you talk to about the film. The rest of the characters are well-played, but not interesting. The pacing crawls. It's an ok film, but if you expect greatness, you may want to look elsewhere, regardless of what professinal critics will tell you about it.

Movie Review: The first BIZARRE James Spader movie!
Summary: 3 Stars

James Spader plays a guy with some issues that returns to his home town. We are never really sure WHY he came back (and neither is he) but, in the process, he changes the lives of his former best friend(Peter Gallagher), his wife (Andie McDowell) and her sister (Laura San Giancomo).

The first Indie film to make serious waves into mainstream Hollywood. It is one of those movies that you watch if you want to "mellow out" to a movie but don't expect to have 'your doors blown off' with action, suspense or drama.

Movie Review: A Strange Movie
Summary: 3 Stars

While I am always amazed by Spader, this is a really strange movie. It is really more psychological than graphic and you sort of lose the point of the whole thing. It was like he would rather hear someone talk about it than DO it, which I really don't understand but guess different strokes... HB
