Movie Reviews of Seven Years in Tibet

Movie Review: No Shangri-La
Summary: 5 Stars

Ever since Ronald Colman raised the bar of expectation by his not so chance encounter with Shangri-La in the 1937 movie rendition of "Lost Horizon", we have been trying to find our way back. Thanks to movies like "Seven years in Tibet", we can focus on the real issues rather than paradise revisited.

With the release of the movie version of Heinrich Harrer's "Seven Years in Tibet" we are presented with a different story - one less fairly tale...Jacque Annaud's...film allows us to move away from the fantasy created by "Lost Horizon"... Annaud succeeds in bringing Tibet to life, to make it more human, more real.

As much as the story is Harrer's, it seems inevitable that the focus moves away from him and onto the Dalai Lama. The book reads like an outsider looking at things from the outside in. The focus of the book, is all Harrer. Luckily, film has an ability to visualize the books cannot ever provide - a real immediate feel. The movie is everything and it at times almost feels like it will slide into Indiana Jones. However, the power of Tibet saves it. It almost feel like Pitt and Thewlis are out of place. The real stars are the set, the landscape and the Nepalese extras. Filmed everywhere but Tibet, the film does give its western audience a real soft landing, one that they will not get with Scorsese's "Kundun"... Hollywood does need to supply a demand and we demand epic scenes, high priced talent, a sense of the exotic. As if east meets west and the fusion of the two is greater than the sum of the parts. For the attention to detail, I can't help but sing the praises. If you can stomach Pitt's fake Austrian accent, the film is a visual delight. It would be a tempting fantasy to hope that we can preserve it...

Movie Review: Brad Pitt's best performance , well almost
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this film more than 14 months ago. At that time, I was not quite acquainted with films and didn't watch as many as I do now. This was surprisingly one of the first Brad Pitt films I had seen. To me he was only a good looking actor. After watching the epic like Seven years in Tibet, I know I am a fan for life.

When this film starts and Pitt is shown as an army officer somewhere in Europe (think it was Hungary) I thought it would be based on the war solely. This film brought the adventurer's spirit in me. There is more than nature, huge land masses, different kinds of people and hills in Seven Years In Tibet. This movie celebrates friendship in a way that is quite difficult for me to comprehend. The relationship between Dalai Lama & Pitt was heartening. What is more hearetening was Pitt's character in the film and how he stood alone in the windmills of time.

Pitt's character is both stupid and mentally very strong in the film. I'd rather not describe how it evolves into that of a satisfied mind. Tibet is beautiful. Being an Indian, I knew some of the places that are shown in this movie so it felt special.

Lastly, this is one of the most under rated films I have seen. I own this movie now. Amazon recommends Kundun if you like this film but I do not. There is no film of the same stature as Seven Years In Tibet. If you're a newbie and want to watch some other Brad Pitt epics then I suggest you watch "Seven" , "Sleepers" and the best film he did "Troy" Kundun was a rather slow documentary like film plus no Brad Pitt.

Movie Review: Best Film Brad Pitt has Made
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved the book and read it many long years ago. At the time I wondered why no one had made it into a movie. Seeing the film finally make it to the screen was a joy for me although the book was a different experience in some ways - but the film is no less enjoyable. I was never a huge fan of Brad Pitt - I like his movies like Ocean 11 and such but I just saw him as one of those younger actors - however, he pulls a performance out of himself that is one of the best; certainly his best effort ever.

The film captures such beauty in its landscape shots and those of people; however, it has that underlying spiritual tone to it as it unfolds - that brings the viewer closer to people on the screen and the story and action. This story, of course is true, which makes it even more impressive.

I would rate this as one of a couple of dozen best films ever made - even though few people went to buy tickets to see it at the box office. In time, people may come to realize that this is a classic film and that Brad Pitt did an outstanding job.

I have seen this movie many times and still seem to get something new from it each time. So, owning the DVD is a good idea - then you can view it as often as the mood strikes you to do so. I fully recommend this movie for anyone searching for his or her own life adventure and spiritual journey.

Movie Review: The Power of Culture
Summary: 5 Stars

Seven Years in Tibet tells a story about the values, perceptions, and history of Tibetin culture as seen and experienced through an outsider's eyes. This point of view portrays the beauty, peace and humanity of a remote culture many people would never experience. The seven year experience changes both the outsider and the people within Tibet as they walk a shared path of curiosity, respect, and dreams. The most touching truth is that friendship and caring has the strength to cross over barriers of differences. The film also mentions the importance of knowing who you are, where you come from, and most importantly, where you belong. Finally, if one culture is eliminated through intolerance, the entire world will miss its presence and its contributions, even a remote society in Tibet. Brad Pitt played a wonderful role from a self centered, short tempered man who could not care about anyone except himself to a person who was given a gift of caring for other people and society. In turn he was able to enrich his own life be being able to care for and connect to his son and teach him his love for climbing. The story takes place in remote circumstances but the message is universal; "The ability to care and understand, is the cornerstone of human contentment."

Movie Review: PRECIOSA ENSEÑANZA
