Movie Reviews of Seven Faces of Dr. Lao

Movie Review: Can a movie affect your life?
Summary: 5 Stars

Quite simply, when I saw this as a child, it impacted me in a very strange and wonderful way. It made me want to be different, it made me want to look at the world in a slightly different way. To this day, I still get tears in my eyes when I see the boy juggling the balls, saying "I can do it, Dr. Lao, I can do it!"

I'm 43 now, and haven't been as different as I wanted to be after seeing this movie. But, still, the movie makes me thing about life, and to think about what affect I have on people.

Cheesy? Sure. A bit over the top? Absolutely. But if you watch this movie with the innocence of a child, it continues to be profound.

Movie Review: A charmer of a movie that tugs your heart strings
Summary: 5 Stars

We first saw this movie when we were in our teens. It made such an impression on us that we never forgot it. Tony Randall is magnificent playing all 7 of the roles, & his supporting cast is equally as impressive. While the SFX are not much by today's standards, in the '60s they were really something to see. This film has something for everyone but offends no one (unless you recognize yourself in one of the flawed townspeople). It is, at one & the same time, well written, thought provoking, heart tugging, romantic, serious, a universal message, & above all...FUNNY!!! A film for the whole family to enjoy!!

Movie Review: Weird in a good way
Summary: 5 Stars

Saw this about in 1970. Pretty strange then and now. "Made" my kids watch it who are always saying "Dad, you always make us watch these old movies". They both watched it all the way through and thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Some good moral teachings abound. It is tough to get kids to watch movies without all the million dollar special effects which take the place of story lines these days. This one was well received, and they didn't even complain about the "loch ness" type monster special effect which was horrendously poor.
Go figure (I dream of) Jeannie falling for a Goat dude!

Movie Review: Charming, life affirming, great to watch with kids
Summary: 5 Stars

I was deeply influenced by this short novel when I read it (several times) in college. I've lived long enough, though, to know that the rendering of book into film is a warp-speed kind of thing, taking you into a different place, for better or (usually) worse.

That said, this movie is just charming in every way, regardless of its "novelistic authenticity." And a wonderful showcase for Tony Randall's acting ability; just *so* appealing and amusing, over and over.

This is a wonderful, unusual, go-to-bed-smiling movie.

Movie Review: Quaint & Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful film with Tony Randall shining as the mysterious Dr. Lao and much of his fantastic crew of seers, wizards, monsters, and Greek gods. This film works for both adults and children and was easily director George Pal's best work. Some people may complain of the somewhat "Cheesy" qualities in the production, but they really enhance this story of a sleepy Arizona town visited by Dr. Lao, whose circus makes the townfolk reconsider their small-minded ideas of life. Highly recommended!!!
