Movie Reviews of Sense & Sensibility (with Miss Austen Regrets) (BBC TV 2008)

Movie Review: Sense and Sensibility
Summary: 3 Stars

While this story followed the book and was well acted, I was extremely disappointed with it. A made for TV movie was made into the DVD without being edited.
It was divided into segments with what was to come next; what happened last segment; and credits in between.
When selling this as a movie; especially with all of the current technology, surely it could have been cleaned up to take out these highly intrusive details.

Movie Review: Sense & Sensibility (with Miss Austen Regrets) (BBC TV 2008) DVD Set
Summary: 5 Stars

Wonderful, exciting, beautifully made! You are drawn in from the very start! Jane Austen's wit & fast pace of the storyline is not lost in this incredible DVD! Romantic scenery, costumes of the period are exact, music is delicious & also true to the time! A new generation has fallen in love again with Jane Austen's creations, including my teenage/adult children too! Women, men, daughters & sons, all glued to it! We have watched it repeatedly, each time there is more & more to exclaim about! Discussions over that time, history, customs, period, quieter pace, restrictions & society with all it's graces! Behind the scene stories, director views & many extras! Classical Literature brought to life with such Artistry! RECOMMEND TO ALL!!! Just Beautiful!!!

Movie Review: Superior adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite of all the new Jane Austen adaptations! Dedicating almost 3 hours really does justice to the story line and of course having Andrew Davies writing the screen play certainly helps!

In my opinion the actresses were really well chosen especially Eleanor & Marianne. Eleanor (Hattie Morahan) is great, her thickly veiled unhappiness, is barely there, very subtle, but a scene of her alone by the sea manages to convey her distress in being separated from Edward. I feel that the Eleanor played by Emma Thompson (in the 1996 movie version) was a bit too cold, distant and as many before me have commented , too old. This Eleanor is youthful, shows a bit more feeling, emotion, and therefore comes across as more human. She is more likable and even though there is a space of 200 years, modern audiences can still relate to her. Marianne's enthusiasm and passion is well captured by Charity Wakefield's performance. Also, Col. Brandon is much younger in this version and more gallant! The duel was an exciting touch! The romance between Col. Brandon and Marianne is properly developed, where as in the movie version all happened too suddenly. A lot that was left out in the movie version, is finally shown (Willoughby's confrontation w/Eleanor, lots of characters in the book were included in this version) Fanny Dashwood is so thoroughly evil, the perfect snob!

The rented cottage and it's surrounding landscapes are breathtaking, as is the various other locations. All in all, a top notch production. Definitely a must see!

Movie Review: Good but movie better
Summary: 4 Stars

I love Jane Austin. The movie of Pride and Prejudice was no where near as good as the miniseries on Cable. This production of Sense and Sensibility done on BBC and rebroadcast by Government Television in the US is just the opposite. The movie which won many awards is by far the superior. This is a good production but if one has to spend money getting one copy, buy the movie.

Movie Review: Superb!
Summary: 5 Stars

The only thing I liked better in the major motion picture is that Alan Rickman was in it, but I think the actor in this version did a fine job as Brandon, too. And maybe Kate Winslet slightly outdid this new little actress, but again, she was fine in the role, too. I loved that this Elinor looked 19 or close to it, whereas Emma Thompson was way too old to play the role.

The scenery was absolutely beautimous in this version - I loved that their rental cottage was by the sea - and thanks to the nearly 3-hour time allotment, no major story lines were left out whereas Hugh Grant's Edward appeared only in the beginning and ending scenes of the big-screen version, leaving the whole rest of the movie Edward-less. I liked this young actor very much, too, and again, Hugh Grant was too old to play Edward but of course it would have looked absurd to pair up a 24 year old man with Emma Thompson. Now mind you, I love the 1995 version and have watched it at least once a year since it's release, but this tv version is just so delightful that I had to watch it three times in succession as soon as I received it. I've been very disappointed in the other new BBC rendtitions of Jane Austen's books, but I have no complaint at all about this one (well, except that Alan Rickman couldn't star in it haha). Five stars!
