Movie Reviews of Semi-ProMovie Review: Reasonably Funny Movie, Typical Will Ferrell Summary: 3 Stars
It is not a streach for Will Ferrell to take on the part of a OWNER/COACH/PLAYER/PROMOTER of an ABA basketball team in Flint Michigan in 1976. He is an ex-disco singer who now has to try and save his team from shutting down as the NBA absorbs the top 4 teams of the league starting the next year. How is he going to do this, by promoting tickets, and trading his teams washing machine for an ex-NBA champion point guard played by Woody Harrelson. Together, they learn to play as a team and have fun doing it along the way. Pretty funny stuff that is done throughout the movie to promote the tropics, like wrestling a bear, or the rollerskating cheeleader jump, to the choreagraphed player sea horse routine. Ferrell plays a loud and annoying character who throughs temper tantrums and has half baked dreams of being a ladies man, much like all his other characters. Funny, yes, but not really new stuff. Worth watching once in the theaters, or renting when it comes out. Don't go out of your way to see it though.
Movie Review: Not his Best Summary: 3 Stars
This is a decent comedy. I don't think it deserves to be called terrible. But it is very uneven. Will Ferrell plays Jackie Moon a 70's one hit singing wonder who uses the money to buy an ABA team. When the ABA decides to merge with the NBA 4 teams will go to the NBA with the rest being disbanded including his Flint Tropics. Jackie then comes up with a plan to be part of the merge and tries to inspire his team to 4th place. Ferrell plays his usual character which is getting a little old at this point. The movie is full of great comedy actors and a few decent jokes. Not everything works in this movie, but it is not as bad as some make it out to be. It won't last long in the theaters so I would just wait for the unrated dvd release in a few months.
Movie Review: Semi Pro = Semi Funny (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars) Summary: 3 Stars
This past weekend I checked out Semi-Pro, and thought it was a decent movie. Will Farell is funny as usual for the most parts, as he is a manager and a player for an ABA team back in 1976. The movie had a funny storyline towards it as the ABA is merging with the NBA, and the team has to finish in the top 4. Majority of the movie is funny at times, such as the shows that the team puts on during games to attract more audiences (is it just me or does almost every Will Farell movie have a bear that appears randomly), but I think the biggest suprise in this movie is the fact that Outkast's Andre Benjamin plays a main role in the movie. If you're a fan of comedy movies and like Will Farell, you will enjoy this move here. Peace.
Movie Review: what you'd expect Summary: 3 Stars
This isn't a great movie, but it's pretty good. It's what you'd expect from Will Farrell. It's stupid, vulgar, silly, and sometimes pointless. If you've seen one of his movies in the part, you've seen this one; it just has a different title and script.
If you're a Will Farrell fan, you'll enjoy this. If not, maybe not. Better than a lot of movies out there.
I would recommend this if you're looking for stupid humor without a lot of social commentary or deep meaning.
Movie Review: FERRELL FANS KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AND THEY WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.....MUCH! Summary: 3 Stars
The Will Ferrell movie machine keeps cranking out film after film. Unfortunately, they haven't been getting better. On a good note, they aren't all that bad either. This film has some very funny moments, but none as good as Ferrell's earlier outings. If your a fan you know what to expect and if your not.......why are you reading this?
