Movie Reviews of Secret RecipeMovie Review: Um...uh...HELL YES!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you get this dvd be prepared to see the most beautifully cartoonish and macabre guitar playing this world has ever known, aaaand the marvelous personality that comes with it! To the 3 star reviews I say this; if you want a no-frills guitarist who's afraid to lose his fan base by playing "weird"(oh,who can understand THAT?!) music, go for the characters who will give you that. If you thought this dvd was too "strange" find some of his live stuff that won't make you have so much fun. The video quality isn't 100% because most of it was taken UNPROFESSIONALLY with old-azz cameras by average joes...DUH! If you want video perfection get your 5 angles on the latest Fleetwood Mac dvd. This isn't a movie,it's a toy.here's my review from buckethead.tk when I snagged one of the first pressings:
"o.k. here it goes:(anyone who may think i'm a psycho-you're absolutely correct!eh,so i've been spotted already!)
day 1:the packaging
the front has a cool buckethead doll on it that resembles a marionette,a drawing of buckethead playing his kfc flying v(there's no kfc letters on eathier bucket hats or the guitar for copyrights,i'm sure) and a yellow robot/amp is plugged into buck's guitar with pink lightning shooting out of it's chest/subwoofer,and the backdrop consists of a drab painting/collage of part of bucke)theadland(from the parking lot?).the top of the dvd says"secret recipie(in an oval)and on a red line across the width of the dvd in bold print id "buckethead".the doll is described as a "do-it-yourself violence doll"and behind the cartoon buckethead is another red strip running the width of the dvd @ maybe a 10-20 degree angle that says"13th anniversary edition".on the bottom of the doll photo it says"20'' remote control action doll(then below it in"deceiving" ;)small print)or dvd-check inside.then below that-"ages 5 and up",although i'm sure that all ages would enjoy it-i'll have to watch to be sure!
the dvd's spine has the "ages 5 and up"above the picture of the violence doll, and then in italic red letters is "secret recipie"then in slightly larger letters"buckethead".the background is black.
the back of the dvd resembles the back of one of those old-time(80's)g.i.joe or ninja turtle figure packages with the oval-type hole at the top so it can be put on a peg that goes on one of those display boards you see in toy stores(if that makes any sense ;)).in the upper-left is a picture of a computer rendering of the amp/robot from the front cover and a yellow bust(a manequin from the sholders up) of the bald guy with light up eyes that bucket has been known to fool around with.it says in black lettering"herbie",so that kind of explains the robot and all!under that picture is a picture(computer rendering?)of b's flying v guitar with a trippy background picture of a burning cabin/house next to some trees(also seems computer rendered),and the strings of the guitar are "ghost lines"from a picture taken with a slow shudder speed-i think.it says in the same black lettering"guitar"under the picture.then to the right of the pictures are descriptions of the toy inside(i'm too lazy to list them all)such as;"-bleeds real blood","powerful accessories",and"projectile hands fire directly into your eyes or throat"(hope momma don't make me bring it back! >:()! :)and to my dismay it also states in slightly smaller text under the description"doll does not fly"-hey what gives?!as the melvins say;"when you buy something from a person, expect the goddamn thing to work!" ;)next,to the right of the description is a drawing of buckethead with his yellow rainjacket, black pants, and black converse hi-tops on.in his left hand he holds a rooster that he eathier just yanked out of his belly,or b's trying to make him drink a spurt of blood shooting from his gut :(in his right hand he holds a guillotine(i think)with 14 blades on it which he has just used to dice off eathier albert or choptop's head with(i think it's supposed to be one of those two)-and the body is wearing blue overalls.just above the rooster is a blue zomie :(head in a glass case that's half filled with water/preservatives with bug-eyes and a toothy, gaunt, gaping mouth that's open.below the chicken is the herbie hand puppet in orange with white hair, and he's shooting towards b's knee.the bacjground for this picture is a dark turqouis.then below the pictures and descriptions are two red, rectangular text boxes.the first one talks about what to expect on the dvd,and at the bottom in italics says"presented in grab-bag format.headcheese not included"-darn-it-all-annaways,i still gotta find me own 'cheese!the second text box has this in italics at the top"special action features&accessories",and then talks about "wedge1 and wedge2"-the names of the two discs:#1 consists of the videos, discography, scrapbook, and most the content, presumably.the second wedge is the live boston bootleg show.then there is one of those cardboard cut -out files like the g.i.joe and ninja turtle packaging used to have that explains his story a little and rates his powers-which are most impressive, indeed! :(then to the right of the "file" are the dvd video, ntsc, and all regions logos with the barcode.also, there is another thing as seen on the g.i.joe and ninja turtle packaging of days long passed-a point stamp!with each purchase of secret recipie you'll recieve 6 binge points(good towards who-knows-what?!),and there is a severed hand on the point stamp.the background of the rear side of the dvd is a continuation of bucketheadland.
i gotta eat something-it's almost noon now!
the inside packaging has no booklet clips on the left side, there instead are dvd pockets on both sides with very nice'n'easy push releases on em!wedge 1 has bucket's head in the middle of the disc with the hole covering his face, and three kfc logos circling the dvd.oh,actually the dvd is the topper of a kfc bucket!wedge 1 is a brand new topper, wedge 2 is an old, worn one and you can see bucket's face in the middle.the booklet included(violence doll instruction manuel) is loose in the case and has a picture of the doll playing guitar on the front, and various instructions on how to use the toy and lists the included accessories.i think it says a warning in spanish not to remove b's mask, and it also says to report to bucketheadland security if any parts are missing cause there is a "rouge tinker"that uses parts for salvage! :o
the packaging is awesome,it's all i hoped for:trippiness in that he would utilize packaging inspired by the old 80's toys of yore, give a few giggles and a few scares, have cool artwork, tell about the contents without just blatantly telling what's what(making you wonder if what's written is a joke or not-some folks i show this too surely will be asking me where they can get this doll! ;)),and just putting together a package that even if someone just stumbled upon it in a random store they would be intruiged and facinated to see what this guy's all about!
packaging:A+
day 2:menus + 1989
(warning!!!!!!* ;D ;D ;D*)you know!))
sorry for goin' all "american psycho"with the packaging! ;)(actually i'm to the part now where mr bateman is explaining his morning daily regimin,so that may have played a part :()
the amazing short film that begins this holy grail is something my grandchildren will remember, surely! ???then i went to the bottom of the middle column once it begins the main menu and clicked-wow! right to the "wonder years"section of secret recipie!had to start at the begginning so i time warped back to the year 1989,(yep,these characters have been at it since the "beneath the remains" days! :onot to mention just a year before that cfh thang started! :'()and instead of going the usual "play all"route i went just clicked anything and that's when things went hazy. >:(i remember a conversation in a citchen(not khicken!)with 2 persons that were discussing something on wall street i think.next, somebodie's hackin' off their hand, and when i came to the deli creeps were sporting great songs and awesome solos! :'(just like the cameraphone commercial says"it was a mothersday miracle!"and then it all goes red......"the dwelling of dino-riki or pete's dragon",you say?nay, even better- :(i want the number of this tripper's interior decorater! :)
well,i am hugely impressed with my first taste of the dvd!(is this thing a registered narcotic?!should be!!!)and i'm guessing just the first part i watched was at least 20 minute to a half hour long!this is the only dvd that even comes close(and skyrockets to new heights!) to giving me the feeling that i had when i first watched the pantera home video part 3!i wanted to cry,run scared, and laugh sadistically the whole time!well, tommarrow is another day-another day to absorb the buckethead show.....quite honestly the greatest show on earth! ???
day 3:1990
holy cow,i haven't seen short films this intruiging since the early david lynch collection!i loved the video in particular that had bucket emerging from the coop to wreak havoc on a pile of miscelaneous metal shards with a sledge!the one with the trippy music ruled as well, and now i know where that picture of b wearing a turtleneck on the binge n' grab board came from! ;)hey, when the creeps play that show in front of a large brick wall what does bucket grab out of one of the holes near the top of it? :-[gotta say, though,it just keeps getting better by the day(when i can watch it)! :'(
day....hmm...too long!
93'
bob finds our bucket in the closet disobeying direct orders!then when,"the riff"starts, bob yells"rocks in my pants!"but not before scolding bucket;"what you got to say,uh?not alot, not alot!"the songs in the comfort zone of the van fill me with warmth"...all i wanted to do was saw off some loaf...".and,well,big b playing with whom i presume to be john zorn is magnificant,as is his shadow-strumming and SWEET green guitar!
94'
a total peices airport disaster!when brain says"i hope he can play,he doesn't look so good"that speaks volumes!then this pastrie expert takes change and speaks something of chedder cheese chili croisaunts, later joinging big b in a song presumably called"nobody cares"!huh!then we see mr bucket writhing in the sandbox, playing a rousing game of catch the ball with ol' bobby!joyous times,i'm sure!
95'
tokyo colma tv spot with dj disk(the "stoner"monotone voice on bucketheadland2?!)followed by an intense performance by the two!(even dj qbert steps in for the show!)
96'
yet another AMAZING deli creeps gig with all the fantastic gusto they all seem to bring!a very sorrowfull repressed memory, however.
97'
very cool mask, indeed!while sweepin' fer ma,buck comes across some trippers from another dimension-maskwearers!next thing ya know, you're on the funeral march-holiday style, trying to figure out exactly who the real buckethead is!then the insanity overcomes!first,a mound of flesh with multiple appendages and dorky facial fetures erupts on the screen, followed closely by a live buckethead decapitation!then some locals interveiw the bucketman and inquire about his disneyland obsession.......he loses contol to my amazement and glee!
98'
there is indeed chicken for all at this show, and bucket is showcasing the album "colma"!I WILL NEVER FORGET ThE PERFORMANCE OF "GHOST"ON HERE!after the show,it's time for staircase shenaningans and then tea and crumpets before shawn lane himself proudly proclaims"save me the slunk!!!!!!"-true highlight btw, bucket's stage energy says it all!
99'
" "played this live should be illegal!b then has fun with praxis(cut it out and go crazy!),then p-sticks(who i originally thought was rob zombie)showcases the talents of micheal jordan, shawn kemp, and harold miner in dunks that send big b into a rousing rendition of "jump man"!!!keep on bingin'!and we will!
00'
who WAS that announcer, anyway??!!i though it had to be bernie or georgie at first, but not so!.........buckethead+2 kneck guitar+mikey patton=moonraker!!!deli creeps create more culinary carnage!
01'
driving, beethoven, wizard of the park, and a bad prom experience sum up this strange, yet hopefully fulfilling year for the buckethead!
02'
shin terai recording footage that is very cherishable!shin himself must've been so hilarious and cool to work with!AWESOME bruce lee figure display!undercover brother backstage footage has bucket looking very unattatched to his movie surroundings, but once snoop n' bootsy come together for photos b cuts loose!eddie griffin cracks a kfc joke, and the year ends with b playing an entertaining version of the giant robot theme and a giant one being delivered to one special guy's house!guillitane was not the end!!!!!
03'
how else to end?!parts of a PRO-SHOT deli creeps show with no stingyness on the pinchface expressions!
