Movie Reviews of Secondhand Lions (New Line Platinum Series)Movie Review: A great tale told within a great tale Summary: 5 StarsA sheer delight - to watch over and over again and share with others. The magical tales told by Huck pull in the younger set, while the rest of us continue to wonder just what is going on in their lives and what they really did for those missing forty years.
Movie Review: A very good movie Summary: 4 StarsFirst off, I like this movie, I feel that one of the things that is not A-ONE is that Duvall and Caine are not given enough opportunity to play
off one another, which is a pity considering they are both such fine actors. I find their individual performances outstanding, but would have
liked to see much more interaction. I think we can blame the screenwriter.
Movie Review: Two Old men and a boy Summary: 1 StarsGreat movie - two old coots find themselves caring for a young boy whose parents have died - they live in a battered old house out in the middle of nowhere - the growth between all of them is awesome - and very, very funny. Good for all ages. We showed it to a group of over 50's who were at our house for a St. Patricks' Day party - enjoyed by all.
Movie Review: Secondhand Lions Summary: 4 StarsIt is a warm story of a young boy who visits his two old bachelor uncles for the summer and the lessons they each learn from their relationship.
It is a great family movie that we have watched many times and still laugh each time we see it.
Movie Review: If You Can Get Through The Sugar-Coating... Summary: 3 StarsThe writing isn't the best.
Haley Joel Osment delivers the worst performance of his short-lived career.
There are a few moments so overly sentimental that you might find you'll have to wipe the sugar off of the screen when the movie is over...
...but "Secondhand Lions" still manages to be a very watchable movie with parts that are actually really quite good.
Could it ever be more than a guilty pleasure? Not so much. It's an all around family movie, with cheesy dialogue and sweet speeches and all, but what it's really about is how people have to have faith in something, even if it's improbable. This message is nicely carried out through the purposely silly (and incredibly entertaining) sections where an elderly uncle relates tales of his adventurous past to his wide-eyed nephew, who thrives on every word of the story, no matter how improbable it is. When you get through all the sugarcoating, the central message is pretty powerful.
It's good for a watch with the family and will make a very enjoyable viewing experience, as long as you don't expect to add this movie to your Top Five list. If you can stomach Osment's shockingly bad acting, I'd recommend giving this cute little movie a try.
6/10
