Movie Reviews of School Ties

Movie Review: Prejudice at a 1950s boarding school
Summary: 5 Stars

"School ties" is the story of David Green (Brendan Fraser), a working-class Jewish boy from PA who wins a football scholarship to a prestigious New England prep school during the 1950s.

David is smart, hard-working, and tries to fit in with his wealthier, privileged, well-connected classmates. He studies, makes friends, helps the football team defeat a rival, wins a girlfriend from a neighboring girls' boarding school, and does it by being himself, except that he hides his Jewish faith.

A rival teammate, Charlie Dillon (Matt Damon), discovers that David is Jewish, and everything changes. Friends (including his girlfriend) drop him, there are anti-Semitic slurs, including finding a Swastika hanging on his wall. Only his roommate (Chris O'Donnell) shows signs of maturity and of accepting him.

An infraction of the school's honor code during an exam brings the whole issue to a head, and David is the likely scapegoat. Honor (and honesty) does prevail, and the irony of the whole matter is that David is by far the best representative of the boarding school's values, far better than any of his wealthier, Christian classmates.

Excellent story, cast, and acting. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: surprising good film
Summary: 5 Stars

The film "SCHOOL TIES" is about a jewish boy who gets the chance to go to an elite prep school; it is set in the 1950's.
He has one "problem"- he is a JEW!
At first he fits in easily and the others like him because he is really nice and cooperative.
So he decides to keep this an secret...
This goes on until a jealous boy forces it out in the open.
Since this happened everything has been changing- only because of his jewish background!

The act is actually quite simpel.
Someone with a secret comes to a new school.
Afterwards the secret makes a big and finally everyone bully him...
But it is absolutely not boring, this film is really good made!

Good actors, interesting dialogues, many wordly wisdoms etc....

The movie covers subjects which concerm us all- old and young people- like the problem with racism, ostracism of minorities, schemes and other bad things.

Movie Review: If you are Jewish and grew up in the 50's, you'll relate...
Summary: 5 Stars

This film might have seemed "strained and obvious" to some of the other reviewers here, but if you are Jewish and grew up in the 1950's, you'll relate to it very well. Especially the part about having to violate the Jewish holidays in order to play on the team -- a conflict that still arises for Jewish students today.

I've used this film very successfully in high school discussions and in classes on antisemitism. And yes, things like this really did happen to Jews -- and still do. The question of whether or not to stay "in the closet" and "pass" or be yourself and get rejected is an issue for other minorities, too. If you work in any area of multicultural studies and/or dialogue, you should add this film to your library.

Movie Review: Good, relevant.
Summary: 5 Stars

Who would know that something like this could still happen in today's society. But people still limit themselves based on religion and the religions of others.

School Ties accurately portrays the life of a Jewish student who is recruited to play football for a Christian school. The difficulty he faces to go to that school is worthwhile since it is a stepping stone to the Ivy League. But when some of the students find out he's Jewish all hell breaks loose.

Cast is spectacular. If it came out today it would definitely be hearalded as a star studded production. Overall a good film, nice to watch and remember what bigotry and ignorance can do.

Movie Review: School Ties, an Unknown Gem
Summary: 5 Stars

Any fans of Ben Afflack, Matt Damon, Chris O'Donnell or Brendan Frazier should enjoy this gem which was made before anyone had heard of any of them.

It is a sharp view of a world that was and hints into what still is.

AND as adorable as Matt Damon is, isn't it fun to see him in the part of a really bad guy?
