Movie Reviews of Scent of a WomanMovie Review: Great character acting with a moving and powerful plot Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great movie and Al Pacino certainly does a great job of playing a difficult and enigmatic character. I particularly like the ending where the Colonel brings forward his best qualities that are laying dormant for much of the movie. If you are familiar with Enneagram types, this character is an Enneagram Eight. This type is known to have a gruff exterior, a fear of vulnerability, but a very big heart.
There is a lot of drama, funny moments and a plot that will hold anyone's attention. The movies makes the point of the importance of good character and points out a lot of the hypocricy of contemporary society in both direct and indirect ways. Also, this movie is interesting because of the struggles with uncertainty, ambiguity, the problems of being human and the problems inherent in living up to high ideals.
The young companion of the Colonel also does a great job in this movie. As the plot develops, a significant and moving relationship forms. This is a nice inspirational, humorous and entertaining movie. How can you really miss with Al Pacino?!
Movie Review: Al Pacino is Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
One of the greatest speeches ever found in a Hollywood movie (except for Patton) is given by Al Pacino in this movie (I supposed this is one of the reasons why he won an Academy Award for 1993 as Best Actor). This is a little known movie with such great performances and acting all around. Rather long, the movie is about a retired, blind, bitter, Army Lieutenant Colonel (played by Al Pacino) and a young preppie (played by Chris O'Donnell). Both spending a wild weekend in New York City, both facing crisis in their lives, both learning about each other, both acquiring strength from each other to continuing on.(I am not saying more about the plot as it will spoil the fun). I seen this movie for under $5.00 in a retailing store. What a shame, such a performance and great movie is worth a lot more!!!! Go buy it, is worth every penny (which is what you paying for it today). The haunting sound of an English Horn in the beginning and end sets the character of this movie, beautiful and great.
Movie Review: PRAISE FOR PACINO VERSATILITY Summary: 5 Stars
Pacino is best known for his gangster portrayals or for his portrayals of Satan or politicians (but wait, I guess those are all the same things, aren't they?).Scent of a Woman is a sensitive portrayal fully worthy of the Best Actor Academy Award garnered by Pacino for his role. One comes to believe that Pacino is truly blind as he stares blankly at his fellow actors. Chris O'Donnell is exceptional as Pacino's much younger pal and "babysitter." A great human drama, Scent of a Woman is a story of redemption that speaks volumes about the challenges, large and small, that all of us face. If we read to know that we are not alone, Scent of a Woman accomplishes equal empathy in a motion picture. Buy it for the Corvette scene. Absolutely terrific. I recall that the subtitle for the movie Superman was "You will believe a man can fly." Perhaps the subtitle to this one should be "You'll believe and blind man can drive...FAST!" Great movie!
Movie Review: Not many films like this. A must watch film. Summary: 5 Stars
A very remarkable film. It takes student Charlie Simms, played by Chris O'Donell, doing something different from most people at a very rich college. Thanksgiving will have Charlie working. He gets a job taking care of Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, played by Al Pacino.
Frank is not an easy person to get along with, even with the patient Charlie. Frank is also blind. The two of them both have problems to deal with during the course of the film. It's Frank who starts the journey for them, with Charlie not having much choice. Frank wants to experience again the finer things in life. The simple things that he cannot do anymore.
Besides Frank going after his desires, he starts getting interested in Charlie's life. They learn a lot about life together, Frank experiencing loss and anger. Charlie confused and not knowing what to do with an ultimate decision. All this in one film is fantastic, and I have not seen many films cover so much.
Movie Review: FLATTERED TO ENTHRALL Summary: 5 Stars
As I was going through the Video collection of my friend yesterday, my eyes caught the title "Scent of a Woman". On seeing this my heart started beating a bit faster making me rush it into the DVD player! Although I watched almost the entire film till about 30 minutes from the end, hoping for "Scent of a Woman" in some unexpected turnaround, when it came to an end finally, it left me with an immense sense of satisfaction of having watched a wonderful film. The subtle thread of human relations going through the film -- amongst the Schoolmates, between the Colonel and his assistant -- oh, it was lovely. Human values scored at the end, and Al Pacino gave a master performance of a monologue while attending the disciplinary proceedings at the boy's school! I would ofcourse watch the film again and again and again! Although the title of the film gives an altogether different idea about the film, the contents of course does not deceive us.
