I love some of these old classics, and this is no exception. Its a great adventure around the time of the French revolution.Sir percy stops executions, and gets involved in helping people get out of France.
Movie Review: close but not perfect Summary: 4 Stars
This is an outstanding film, but while this is a good copy and better than what I've had in the past, it's not as good as I wanted.
Movie Review: A classic! Summary: 4 Stars
If you enjoy the se stories, you'll like this classic version. It holds up well, even 70+ years later.
Movie Review: 5 star Movie - Minus 2 Stars for Video Quality Summary: 3 Stars
Wonderful film! Leslie Howard was perfect for the role and played it amusingly well. Very recommended. However, my review is for the DVD release: I wouldn't complain but I've definitely seen it in much better condition on TCM and archives. The one I purchased -- 2007 (Synergy Ent) version -- is not it. Through most of the film it's dark and fuzzy, and there's a bit of feedback on the audio. I would suggest searching for another version, personally; but if you get this one, don't say you weren't warned... This film is definitely a must-own classic, so it'd be worth it to get the best available. It's out there somewhere.
Movie Review: Abysmal quality for fine old classic! Summary: 1 Stars
This is an oldie bur a goodie! I've long had great affection for this most enjoyable classic, especially for the fun Leslie Howard clearly had in playing the title character. What a huge disappointment awaited me when I recently received my copy of this DVD-R from Amazon.
The quality is merely a clone of a cheap VHS transfer I have had for 15 years! The picture quality is all muted greys with no contrast of sharp blacks and whites, the sound is muffled, and even during the titles the inferior print 'jumps'.
By coincidence, my local ABC (Australia) network had a late night showing of a British-sourced copy of the movie the other night. What a difference! Yes, this is an old film, but here we had sharp, good quality visuals with solidly contrasted blacks and whites and clear dialogue and music. Hopefully this version will be available before too long. In the meantime, avoid this DVD-R - it is a travesty!
