I finally found this DVD at a local video store and rented it yesterday. From other reviews I have read, I didn't expect much more than soft-core porn but I was surprised at how competent and intelligent this movie was. The indie sensibilities are there along with the themes of loneliness, hopelessness, isolation, tragedy, hope, rebirth and redemption. Asia is very honest about her feelings and experiences as the character Anna Battista who represents a fictionalized depiction of the director. Many people comment on the T&A in this film and how that's the only good aspect of it. I feel there is more to this film than just sex and honestly, I wouldn't say there is that much sex and nudity, certainly not enough to warrant an NC-17 rating. Perhaps if some of it was cut out, people would appreciate the dark themes presented here more. However, "Scarlet Diva" is not for everyone and I can understand why this film was not warmly received. If you like foreign films, art/literature/film dealing with the themes of redemption, descent into madness, self-analysis, etc. from a female point of view, and if you like the films of Fellini (as a previous reviewer stated) with a little Alex Cox and Jim Jarmusch (sp?) thrown in, I think you will enjoy this film. Give it a chance, and not just for the T&A. :-)

Release Date: 11/26/2002 Run time: 91 minutesItalian starlet Asia Argento (who costarred in XXX with Vin Diesel, as well as several films directed by her father, horror maestro Dario Argento) wrote, directed, and stars in this story of an emotionally unstable Italian starlet named Anna Battista, who describes herself as "the most lonely girl in the world." Anna flailingly searches for love as she grapples with the pressures of life as a star (including grabby fans, lecherous producers, and abusive directors), travels from Rome to London to Amsterdam, has a drug-induced freak-out at a photo shoot, and smokes a lot of cigarettes. A tryst in Paris with an Australian rock star leaves her pregnant and convinced she's in love; but when he abandons her, she starts burning herself. Scarlet Diva features copious explicit sex, occasional flashes of visual razzle-dazzle, and a great deal of emotional torment. And while it lacks narrative shape, it is vivid and undoubtedly accurate. --Bret Fetzer
