Movie Reviews of Scaramouche

Movie Review: En Garde!
Summary: 5 Stars

I admit that I assumed this was another typical swashbuckling film. Boy, was I wrong. This is a technicolor spectacular showcasing the charm of Stewart Granger, fiery intensity of Eleanor Parker and the athleticism of Mel Ferrer. Janet Leigh is beautiful but does not have very much to do here. This is a wonderful film with lots of drama and comedy. I really highly recommend this as a family film. Granger really gets to show off his talent as a comedian. Parker is exquisitely gorgeous and high strung as a gypsy woman. The swordplay btwn Granger & Ferrer is exciting. This ranks with "Mark of Zorro" starring Tyrone Power for captivating the viewer's attention.

Movie Review: Best Swordfights in movies ever!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the few instances where the movie is far better than the book which inspired it, this version of 'Scaramouche' has some of the most fantastic sword fights ever put on film.
A favorite of my childhood, it is still in my 'top ten' list of adventure movies; Hyperkinetic, humorous, it never gets dull.
Stewart Granger never has been better, even as in other favorites of mine as 'Prisoner of Zenda' or 'North to Alaska'. Mel Ferrer is the suavest villain you can get, Eleanor Parker never has been so attractive, and Janet Leigh is a vision of Heaven.
Why the current adventure movies are not so enjoyable anymore?

nothing much to add to the previous reviews except i met Stewart Granger in london not long before he died and had about 30 minutes of conversation with him he was still visiting his back doctor at he time due to the swordfight in Scaramouche it was as authentic a swordfight as you can get on the screen and somehow he damaged his back, also we discussed hair loss which i was having that problem at the time and he told me how to cure it his way bend forward as far as you can and vigorously brush your head with a brush, also i might add every other word was a swear word...

Movie Review: A great story and Stewart Granger, too
Summary: 5 Stars

Is it just me? I love Technicolor.

This film is fabulous. The plot moves quickly, and the fencing scenes are great. I really like Stewart Granger; he brings a credibility and a personality and a sense of fun to his characters that makes them very real. And, Stewart Granger did all his own stunts; that always adds to a film. I have to say, the man looks good in tights, too (not many men do).

The famous sword fight is done without any dialogue or background music, which makes it very effective. Modern filmmakers should take note.

Movie Review: Fun film
Summary: 5 Stars

Scaramouche is a terrific and fun film set around the time of the French revolution. The acting is excellent. Stewart Granger plays the dashing lady's man. He learns sword fighting to avenge the death of his best friend, killed by the top sword fighter in all of France. The film looks beautiful in every way: the colorful sets, the lovely costumes, great cinematography. It is funny and has some really amazing sword fighting. Janet Leigh, Eleanor Parker, and Mel Ferrer are all equally terrific. Highly recommended.
