Movie Reviews of Scanners

Movie Review: This may blow your mind...
Summary: 4 Stars

This 1981 film by David Cronenberg is absolutely mind blowing, you have to see it to know what I'm talking about.

This movie is about people with telekinetic powers that are viewed by society as "freaks" but a potential power source by one company, Consec. These "freaks" are called scanners and have the ability to get into your mind and "scan" it. Scanners can use their ability for bad or good but sometimes have a hard time to control their ability. Dr. Ruth, a "psycho-pharmacist" who heads a research team for Consec (played by Patrick McGoohan)aids scanners with their abilities. Dr. Ruth tries to help one lone scanner Cameron Vale (artist Stephen Lack) to use his powers in a more positive way. Another scanner Darryl Revok uses his powers in evil ways and tries to convert Vale. This is where the action begins.

This little gem is listed as a horror film, but I found it more sci-fi than anything else. It may be dated with the clothing worn and is a low budget film, but do not let this stop you, for it is one good movie! It is definitely one for lovers of sci-fi, thrillers or horror not to miss.

I bought this when Amazon had a terrific deal on DVDs and I sure got my money's worth! Sometimes low budget films can pack a punch and this one does it, don't miss Scanners...

Movie Review: Splitting Headache...
Summary: 4 Stars

The government is at it again, this time trying to recruit "scanners" (telepaths w/ telekinetic as well as pyrokinetic abilities) for a secret project. Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack) is found / captured at a shopping mall after turning a woman's brain into pudding. He awakens at "CONSEC", a government installation for the bringing in of scanners. Meanwhile, Revok (Michael Ironside) busts up a meeting of corporate executives who are there to see what a scanner is. Revok volunteers to be scanned by the guest speaker. Instead, Revok makes the poor guy's head explode like a poodle in a microwave! Dr. Ruth (Patrick McGoohan) sends Vale out to find Revok and his mysterious scanner underground. Along the way, Vale runs across a separate underground of benevolent scanners. This group includes Kim (Jennifer O'Neill). Soon, Revok is at war with them and sends several assassins to finish them off. Many secrets are revealed, and things are nothing like what they seem to be! David Cronenberg both wrote and directed this film. He was ahead of his time as far as gore was concerned, but more importantly, he had a great imagination! "Scanners" is one of those movies that shocks you if you let it. It's also a lot of fun to watch...

Movie Review: Classic from David "king of venereal gore" Cronenberg
Summary: 4 Stars

Unfortunately I cannot comment on the DVD, as I have yet to get it. Although I am happy that it is finally getting the DVD Treatment!

Just saw this 1981 classic from the Cronenberg. Very scary and has some of those eecky scenes that the director is well-renowned for. I just thought after watching this film that this movie was so ahead of its time. I was born in 1981 and saw this today afternoon in 2001 and still enjoyed it immensely. Clever, gory, great score from Howard Shore (a little melodramtic at times but excusable considering the age of the film) and "Scanners" has Micheal Ironside in it as the most powerful Scanner of them all.

There some real memorable scenes in the film especially the one in the conference room when a scanning demo goes all wrong and the last act. I have seen "Scanner Cop," the spin-off of the original, and thought that film to be very good too. Highly recommended. Just not right for the squeamish...!

Movie Review: Number 19: Twenty greatest horror films made
Summary: 4 Stars

Scanners was filmed in 1980, and it shows in the clothes, the southern california hippie-commune dialog, and the props. In the early 80's there was a huge emphasis on cults, astral projection, and jogging, all of which show up as influences in this film in one form or another.
But the mental warfare plot, the special effects, and the stunning beginning AND ending, elevate this film above average. I've often said this is the horror film the beach boys were destined to make if they'd continued down that Charlie Manson path.
Stephen Lack would never again reach the acting summit he does here, but Michael Ironside is the true standout. He plays a complete bastard with his usual effortless ease.
I removed a star for the simple fact that the plodding pace of this film annoys me.

Movie Review: Let the Scanners scan you....!
Summary: 4 Stars

This film is one of my personal new 'classics' of horror, although it's also a sci-fi film. The plot centers around a small group of 'mutants,' long before the 'X-Men' made them cool, who have the unique ability to scan the thought patterns of others, thus knowing what people are thinking. However, as always, not all mutants play nice, as actor, Michael Ironside, has a great role as the demented Revok, who likes to scan people's minds just a bit too long, leading one to lose one's head, as in the infamous exploding head scene! Revok leads his bands of rebel mutuants against the establishment, and only another Scanner with equal ability can stand in his way. Even though this film is dated somewhat and campy in parts, it's definitely entriguing and fans of gross-out effects will eat this film up!
