Movie Reviews of Sayonara

Movie Review: Sayonara
Summary: 5 Stars

This is Brando at his very best. I loved this movie from beginning to end. It is sentimental without being sappy, it is simply a great love story without any of the modern day 'scenes'. Red Buttons is simply superb, along with James Garner. Marlon was able to do the southern accent seemingly without any variation. This movie was excellent from beginning to end and left me feeling extremely happy to have a copy. The Japanese actresses fit the roles without exception. Would recommend this movie to anyone who loves a great love story with an exceptional ending

Movie Review: Sayonara
Summary: 5 Stars

This potent, then-controversial drama about a romance between an American and an Asian during wartime was adapted from a novel by James Michener. Shot in Technicolor on location in Japan, the film is gorgeous to look at, and Brando's work is skillfully nuanced, as his character's outlook gradually evolves from intolerance to enlightenment through the love of a woman. Red Buttons, playing Brando's best friend, and Miyoshi Umeki as his lover won Oscars for their touching, heartfelt performances as the doomed couple.

Movie Review: A Definite Must-See!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is definitely in the same league with Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, A Patch Of Blue and The Gentlemen's Agreement as a great classic. It's a movie that in it's time was considered extremely controversial in that it addressed a then topic of hot debate and issue. Cross-Cultural and Ethnic Marriage. This movie will have you fixed to the screen as you watch this film based on true events unfold. Prejudice and ignorance vs. Love and truth.

Movie Review: Fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

I can only nod my head in agreement with the other reviewers who have lauded this film. It is beautifully filmed, well-written, and turns out suberb performances by Red Buttons, Miyoshi Umeki, Miiko Taka, James Garner, and especially Brando. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone looking for a beautiful love story that is heartwrenching and inspiring and provides a lesson in the infinite power of love--a power that transcends all barriers.

Movie Review: Very well done...
Summary: 5 Stars

...a very enjoyable movie.Although Brando's southern accent is a bit overplayed, it's not a drag on the rest of the movie. This movie explores very well the contrast between living your life according to imposed expectations as opposed to living the life you actually want to, as all characters here experience this in rather profound ways.

A very worthwhile movie, on that you'll watch more than once..
