Movie Reviews of SayonaraMovie Review: A sensitive and 5 hanky movie Summary: 5 Stars
So much has been reviewed about this movie so I will just put my two cents in about the performances I loved. Marlon Brando....skillfully underplayed role. When I first saw the movie as a kid, I wasn't sure if he would be a sympathetic character or not. He's wonderful. Ricardo Montalban...one of the most under-rated actors ever. I remember reading a long time ago that when he danced on the Kabuki stage, the audience was not aware that it was Mr. Montalban performing ontage. Although one does wonder why a Japanese actor (like James Shigeta) was not given the role, I loved him in this. Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki...this is where the 5 hankies come in. I'm not sure if Japanese people thought her character was a stereotype or not...I will only say that I enjoyed her portrayal. She was so obviously in love with her 'Joe'. And Red Buttons...steadfast, unmovable in his decision to love this woman. What a sin that racism still rears its ugly head in 2008. Let us hope that thoughtful movies like this one will continue to be made.
Movie Review: Great Movie! Summary: 5 Stars
"Sayonara" is a great movie! The story is compelling, emotional & impactful. It also has themes that will make one think. The movie touched my heart.
I had not heard of "Sayonara" before I "came across it" on cable television. Therefore, I assume that it is a movie that has been "flying under the radar." It has all of the qualities of a classic, such as "Rocky" & "Star Wars." However, for "Sayonara" to be considered on the same level as other classics, then people have to "get the word out."
Marlon Brando & Miiko Taka are superb as the two main characters. Red Buttons, Miyoshi Umeki, Patricia Owens & Ricardo Montalban are wonderful in their supporting roles. James Garner ("The Great Escape" & "The Rockford Files") is one of my favorite actors & he complements Marlon Brando very well in a supporting role. I highly recommend "Sayonara!"
Movie Review: Sayonara Forever! Summary: 5 Stars
What a superb cast! Great sets, cinematography, outstanding musical score, superb message! A film to be archived as a window into our culture and theirs. The smug policies of early occupation days is clearly demonstrated here. The absolute beauty of Japan and it's women is clearly seen. This film makes you want to jump into the screen and feel what Marlon Brando must have felt in the arms of his darling love. Red Buttons was so good in this film that there's no wonder how he got the Oscar! My only complaint would be a Hispanic man (Richardo) playing a Japanese kibuke dancer. That silly error detracts from the rest of this wonderful film. Remember "The Courtship of Eddy's Father?" look for his irresistable housekeeper in an Oscar nominated role here. She recently passed into Gods hands. Bless you forever Miss Miyoshi Umeki!!!!
Movie Review: Beautiful and touching film Summary: 5 Stars
Marlon Brando plays a Korean War pilot who has been ordered to rest in Japan, because his fiance's father is the commanding general. There he becomes pals with James Garner and the two of them meet Japanese dancers. Socializing with the locals is strictly forbidden, but Brando gradually falls in love with the star dancer. Their relationship must be kept secret, but Brando finds this impossible when one of his men, played by Red Buttons, marries a Japanese woman and is subjected to harsh army prejudice.Brando is very good as the southern charmer, but Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki steal the show as the married couple who face tragedy in an unforgettable scene. The beauty of cherry blossoms and kimonos and the cruelty of biogtry combine to make a lovely film you'll want to see again and again.
Movie Review: Still Wonderful After All These Years Summary: 5 Stars
I just watched Sayonara on TCM and I am still in awe of its beauty and subject matter. This movie does not seem dated to me, aside from the cars and the clothes, even though it was filmed almost 50 years ago. I remember seeing this movie when it first came out, and I was heartbroken at the suicide of Kelly and his young bride. I was equally thrilled at the ending when Brando and Hana-Ogi rode off into the sunset. However, I think Brando stunk in this movie, all he did was mumble in that horrible southern accent he put on. However, here is something interesting: the actress who played Hana-Ogi, Miiko Taka, was born in Seattle, Washington. You wouldn't know that, would you, by listening to her or watching her? Great acting job by Ms. Taka. Wonderful movie.
