Movie Reviews of Savior

Movie Review: In A Word: Wow!
Summary: 5 Stars

The only reason I watched this film was because I noticed Oliver Stone produced it and I associate him with outstanding war films. I had not seen Dennis Quaid do any really good acting in years, except for Stone in "Any Given Sunday" but it was just a supporting role. This is certainly the best work Quaid has done as a leading man since "The Big Easy" but it could not be a more different role for him. Essentially, Quaid plays a man who has been shaped into being a war machine. He is pretty much dead in every other sense and the loss of his family in a bombing and his own violent response to that loss have shaped him into who he is now. The opportunity to leave that deadened state arrives when Quaid delivers a baby and then tries to get the baby and its mother to the Red Cross. This is all set against the Serbian-Bosnian war, which is about as pointless a war to an outsider as any war could be. The land itself is filled with lovely vistas, breathtaking views and has to be the most horrible place in the world to live. If you were to send a postcard, it would read, "Absolutely gorgeous, absolutely horrible." Quaid gives the performance of his life here with an excellent screenplay, director, cinematographer and supporting actors behind him every step of the way. I can't believe he has spent all these years playing these wolfish bachelor types when he had this kind of talent. There is one misleading aspect to this film though. Nastassja Kinski is only onscreen for the first five minutes of the movie. Therefore, she is not starring in this film as one would expect by her top billing.

Movie Review: One of the Most Disturbing Films of All Time
Summary: 5 Stars

SAVIOR is one of the most brutal, disturbing films I have ever witnessed, and certainly one of the best films of the year. It is about hope in the face of war, but it is never uplifting. Instead, it forces some of the imagery inside your head with some of the most brutal and uncompromising scenes since SCHINDLER'S LIST. The plot concerns a man named Joshua Rose (perfectly played by Dennis Quaid), whose wife and child are killed moments after he sees them. Hearing that Muslims may be involved, he goes to the nearest Mosque and opens fire on the innocent people praying inside. To escape his crime, he joins the Foreign Legion, overseas. This is where he meets Vera, a woman pregnant with her rapist's child. Rose (who goes under the name of Guy in the Legion) saves her from certain doom, and takes her under his wing. Together, they try to escape the cruelties of war, and perhaps to start a new life. I think everything about this movie is first rate, from the stunning cinematography, to the soundtrack, and to the excellent performances (especially by Quaid and Natasa Ninkovic as Vera). This movie is definately highly recommended. If it does nothing else for you, it will at least open your eyes to the horror and ultimate pointlessness of the war going on in Bosnia.

A little side note: Oliver Stone serves as executive producer.

Movie Review: Outstanding Movie. Sad Reality.
Summary: 5 Stars

Now this is one of those movies that'll give you goose bumps, tears, and definetly stay in your heart. Brutal, dramatic, and unfortunately very real, Savior is one of the best "based on an actual event" war movies I've ever seen.
Directed by Peter Antonijevic (former Yugoslavian film director, who had been jailed as a political prisoner during the war) and produced by Oliver Stone, Savior is a true story from the brutal Bosnian War, and the real life of an American hero.
Joshua Rose (Dennis Quaid) an American stationed in France, goes on a murderous rampage to avenge the deaths of his wife and a young son who were killed in a terrorist bombing. He joins the Foreign Legion in order to escape his crimes. Giving up his true identity and past he accepts a new name of Guy and becomes a mercenary for the Serbs.
Possessed by his mission of vengeance, Guy fights a war he doesn't believe in, hoping to find something he does. That is until he meets Vera,(Natasa Ninkovic) a young Serbian woman released by the Muslims in a prisoner exchange who's pregnant by her Muslim rapist. Guy saves her life, helps her with the birth of her child, child she refuses and together they fight for survival in a country destroyed by war.
"He is her only hope for survival. She is his only chance for redemption."
Savior is truly an UNFORGETTABLE STORY.

Movie Review: Director Commentary gives great insight into the idea behind this film.
Summary: 5 Stars

Other reviewers seem to believe that the Director is completely anti-Muslim and believes all Muslims are 'bad'. I would have to say those people have not watched the film with the Director's Commentary track.

If they had, they would have heard his comments on how Joshua Rose (Dennis Quaid) goes on a killing spree in the local mosque because of his stereotypical (after having his wife and child murdered by an Islamic Fascist) belief that the only thing needed to find those who perpetrated the terrorist act was to walk to the local mosque.

If the director really believed that all Muslims were 'bad' and 'evil' it would have come through in his commentary, which it does not.

In all, I find the film to be wonderfully done and to have had very poignant moments which really showcase just how great of an actor Dennis Quaid happens to be. You really believe that he is in fact, not Dennis Quaid, but Joshua Rose -- a lost man trying to find a way to cope -- and redeem himself. The supporting actors are also quite talented and I believe add an air of realism to this film which really hits home.

Movie Review: Savior - As seen in Beograd!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this film in Beograd (1998) with two Serbian friends who recommended I see it and who translated when necessary. The audience ... totally Serbian ... gave cheers and applause at moments which I thought totally inappropriate. However, my friends understood my feelings as I understood theirs. They were members of Otpor ... the Resistance Movement.

My first trip to "Yugoslavia" was in 1985. I had seen "Yugoslavia" without the hate and anger portrayed in film. The message was extremely poignant ... it showed what happens when political and religious differences supersede rational thinking. It made me realize what could happen, even in America, if we let our emotions run rampant and lose respect for others.

For me there was no hero ... the blame for the atrocities rested with all the individuals: American, Serbian, Croatian & Bosnia.

The message .. for me ... was that there is no place in this world for uncontrolled anger or intolerance for the religious or politicl beliefs of others.

I highly recommend it! It should be seen by every adult in America!
