Movie Reviews of San FranciscoMovie Review: A man that goes places he shouldn't Summary: 5 Stars
The first time I met Charlie Beardsley he was staring intently at the window of a diner at the corner of Market and Larkin St. Inside the diner sat his ex-wife, Sheila, a woman that had engaged in acts with his best friend and then promptly announced to her family that she was a lesbian. She changed her mind only days after the divorce was final and she was now living with the owner of the diner in Pac Heights. Charlie Beardsley had not taken the news well, and spent most afternoons finding different reasons to leave work and stare through the window at the woman he used to spend his days with.
I stood on the corner waiting to cross the street when I noticed him. He turned away from the window and stared out at the street, and then back around and inside. I watched his routine and then couldn't help but walk over and ask what he was doing. As it turns out, he was eager to be lead astray. We walked together towards an unknown destination while he told me his story. He spoke quickly and quietly until he got to the subject of his best friend. "A man that goes places he shouldn't, that argues with people in stores, at intersections, on buses and trains, and curses at children. And yet, she found him attractive." I asked him if he wanted to get a cup of coffee. I'm not sure why I felt an affinity for him. He looked to be older than me by at least ten years, with worn clothing that had, at one time, cost a week's paycheck. He declined my offer and said that he was thinking of leaving San Francisco.
A year later, he was still staring at the window of the diner on the corner of Market and Larkin.
Movie Review: Likeable movie! Summary: 5 Stars
This is an enjoyable movie featuring Jeanette MacDonald and Clark Gable. The story centers around the romance between Jeanette MacDonald's character, a singer who is the daughter of a country preacher, and Clark Gable, a rogue with a heart underneath. Very underneath. Being a new girl in town, Jeanette MacDonald's character ends up as a singer in one of Clark Gable's somewhat disreputable joints. She is an opera singer by training and when the local operators of the opera house hear her voice, naturally they want her for the opera house. However, she is under contract for two years to Clark Gable's character and thus the romance and the conflicts begin. There are several twists throughout the film that keep it from being an entirely predictable "chick" flick. And we are treated to several scenes featuring Jeanette MacDonald singing some beautiful opera arias. She is remarkable in that not only is her voice well-trained, but also naturally beautiful as well. Clark Gable's character is very much along the lines of his later Rhett Butler role in "Gone With the Wind". However, he isn't quite as suave here as in "Gone With the Wind" and I actually found myself missing that suave element to his rogueness. Nonetheless, this is a likeable movie and the extras included on the DVD are likeable too. Especially the special included about Clark Gable's life and career.
Movie Review: A classic - City and Film Summary: 5 Stars
The film San Francisco, like the city itself, is a classic. While not a musical, there are some great musical numbers including the theme song, "San Francisco, open your golden gate..." It's a basic, boy meets girl, losses girl, has to fight to get her back, etc. with the climax the destruction of the great city the film is named for. Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and Jeanette MacDonald are all wonderful in this film. Tracy is not competing with Gable for MacDonalds love, but for her sole - Spencer plays a priest again.
I've waited a long time for the release of this DVD, and enjoyed the opportunity to finally buy it.
Movie Review: Well Constructed Disaster Film Packs a Punch Summary: 5 Stars
Wonderful film with a terrific story. Clark Gable is "Blackie" a man who grew up in San Francisco and drew a love of saloons and women. Spencer Tracy is his friend from childhood who chose to become a priest. Janette MacDonald is the beautiful woman who falls in love with Blackie but is guided by Spencer. Blackie also wants her to become a dance hall singer while her ambitions lean towards being an opera singer. The music in the movie is outstanding and while the story is a black and white scenario between good and evil but it is well constructed and a lot of fun. The special effects are pretty good too.
Movie Review: San Francisco - A Great Movie Summary: 5 Stars
I watched the film tonight after recently purchasing it through Amazon. Years ago I saw it for the first time and remembered it's powerful message. The main theme is that San Francisco had prosperity at the turn-of-the-century but was destroyed by an earthquake in 1906. Some might think that this happened as punishment for immorality. Whatever the reason for disaster such as this all people are affected. It's great that outstanding films such as "San Franciso" are available to view in 2007 - 71 years after it was made (1936).
