Movie Reviews of Same Time, Next Year

Movie Review: Same Time Next Year
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this movie. Alda was funny. Burstyn was endearing. Although the plot was based on an immoral relationship--two married people meeting every year, same place same time--it is a story of love, friendship, and, yes, respect. The story moves you through time (27 years, I think)in a very nostalgic way, especially those of us who remember the Viet Nam years. I loaned the DVD to a younger woman and the nostalgia wasn't really there for her but she enjoyed the story. I believe women enjoy this story more than men because it is about what every woman dreams of--love AND true friendship. My husband didn't like it because he feels it condones unfaithfulness. I guess it does, but they never loved their spouses any less. It tells me that you can love more than one person deeply (but I think I was a little uncomfortable about having sex with more than one person). If that part of it makes you uncomfortable I'd say don't watch it. But having said that, I'd say if you enjoy humor and can relate to the deep feelings, watch it. You'll love it.

Movie Review: A Great Show
Summary: 5 Stars

The premise of this show is the coming together of two people who have a chance encounter at a small in on the California coast. They decide to meet at that same place every year after that. Time goes on, and though their lives change dramatically over the years, they still remain in love, though they will not leave their spouses for each other. Perhaps it's the 'forbidden' part that makes them come back year after year, or perhaps they find something in each other that they just can't do without. They deal with the birth of a child, and the death of a son in Viet Nam. Over the years their love deepens and the commitment is always there. Of course, it's meant to be a comedy, and there are a lot of laughs, but it's also a very romantic story, and at the end of the show, every woman watching it will have tears in her eyes. A great show, though in true Alan Alda style, he tends to get annoying in some scenes. Ellen Burstyn is at her best in this movie. Probably not for kids, as the entire show is based on marital infidelities.

Movie Review: A genuine classic ...
Summary: 5 Stars

A hilarious romantic comedy about two "squares" who somehow fall into lust during the 1950's in a secluded coastline get-away. Lust evolves into love and love evolves as their two lives seems inexorably out of phase; she's liberal, he's conservative and then they switch. Through all the turmoil created by current events over the 26 years of the movie's timeline, they remain enchanted with each other once a year as their love and deep respect for each other matures while their "real" lives keeps them intertwined. The characters grow together despite their limited contact. Every year's meeting is a matured relationship started anew.

Alan Alda's acting reflects the happy-go-lucky attitude most associate with his MASH character. Ellyn Burstyn is brilliant. Marvelous acting and a great story line.

This is an absolutely enjoyable movie that you can watch over and over again, enjoying it more with each viewing.

Movie Review: Better Than Ever in DVD!
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I have watched this film many times over the years, but we were pleasantly surprised at the clarity of the picture on the new DVD release. We saw things we had never seen before! The scenery of California's Mendocino Coast is beautiful, and one can almost feel the wind blowing. The story affects us differently as we also age. We tend to identify with the characters (not surprisingly!)when they are our own ages. Having been born in the late 40s, their first encounters were in our childhood, but we remember many of the cars, hair and dress styles. The historical data between the "acts" challenges us to identify the persons and events related. Is there a list of that anywhere?

The film is a definite must-see for all who like a good romantic film, even with the wrong basic premise. It could almost make adultery popular!

Movie Review: Such a pity because this is great
Summary: 5 Stars

Isn't it a shame that others have to compare their own failures and impose them on a film?
I've read some of the revues here and frankly they have nothing to do with the film but only compare their own bitter experiences.
Over the years (many of them), I've bought this film because it brings hope and revives dreams. Yep, hope & dreams! Why? Easy, because all of us dream, or hope, of finding the ideal relationship. The actors in this film make us believe that this is possible even if it is only during two days per year.
Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn will live forever in my mind as being the perfect couple.
Yeah, and when it comes out on high definition video, I'll buy it again :)
