Movie Reviews of Sam Cooke - LegendMovie Review: Beautifully-Done Documentary Summary: 5 Stars
Though I didn't grow up in the era of Sam Cooke's physical reign, I've been a fan ever since my dad first played "Cupid" for me when I was about seven years old. Since then, I've accumulated as many Sam Cooke albums as I could find, but was always disappointed by the lack of video material available. This DVD was a breath of fresh air, and it was awesome for me, after twenty years of listening to his music to finally watch him in action, as well as to hear his speaking-voice. He was every bit as handsome, eloquent and articulate as I'd always believed him to be. I also enjoyed the interviews that were conducted with his siblings--particularly his brothers. They looked so much like Sam that I was given a general idea of what he would probably look like if he was still with us today. This was a very beautifully-done, albeit condensed documentary of a soul legend and a musical pioneer. Kudos! :)
Movie Review: About time Sam's fans had this sort of thing to enjoy Summary: 5 Stars
My only reservation with this program is that I would have liked to have more on the circumstances behind Sam's death .
He was very influential as a singer and business person , but he was also a man . That may have been too much for certain people to stomach .
The fact that the program features interviews with Sam's family shows that it has been approved - that can also mean that it is a whitewash , sanitised for public consumption .
That is a fine line to walk .
Just like the Kennedy assassination , one gets the feeling that there is still more to be told . I believe the writer Peter Guralnick is writing a book on Sam and if it is anything like his books on Elvis , it will be compellng reading .
A great program and worth watching whether or not you are a fan of this wonderful singer who may have never reached his true potential .
Movie Review: EXCELLENT BIO OF THIS LEGENDARY ENTERTAINER!! Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD was well documented--I enjoyed how the way it was put together, including getting a glimpse of some of the rare performances [even though I thought they could have used more time, like 2 hours, for this documentary--that way they could have elaborated more about his life and some of the performances in general]. I also enjoyed the interviews [but I was not sure about Sam's last manager, Alan Klein], but were these interviews done around the time this doc was being produced, because a few appeared to be dated?? Anyway, I looked at this DVD four times yesterday, and each time was a joy in itself, it was just sort of sad that it took almost 40 years to make at least a documentary of this great entertainer who touched [and is still touching] so many lives--can a movie be close behind??
Movie Review: Keep Movin' On Summary: 5 Stars
Like this recent release of a 'new' Sam Cooke song, the legend continues. The CD peaked my interest for more on this trajic hero. Then after buying other disks, I came across this DVD. I had not warched it until the Christmas holiday, when my sister had sent me Sam Cooke SARs collection: a double treat! The DVD is insightful and suggests the multi-dimensional aspects of this gospel/soul artist/songwriter/producer personality. My quest continued with the 'You Send Me' biography which chronicled his rise from obscurity to his untimely demise. Definitely a winner! Now we need a feature movie with Denzel Washington (directed by Spike Lee of course) to 'bring it on home to me! (I'm reading both Marvin Gaye's bio and my 2nd Temptations book as well)
Movie Review: I was raised on Sam Cooke ... Summary: 5 Stars
God rest my Dad's soul! He brought us up on all the greats, but Sam Cooke has been my all-time favorite since I was a toddler. My brother reminded me a few days ago that we were not brought up on lullabys. We were brought up listening to Sam Cooke, and to this day I still hear my Dad whenever I hear Sam Cooke. It's like the two are one -- there was no looking at my Dad without seeing his love for Sam Cooke. And there is no listening to Sam Cooke -- even to this day -- without remembering my Dad.
There have been great voices since Sam Cooke, but none will ever be equal to him. God gave him a gift that is absolutely timeless. He was smooth and he was gorgeous and his voice will never grow old.
