Movie Reviews of Sam Cooke - LegendMovie Review: A MUST HAVE DVD FOR EVERY SINGER OUT THERE Summary: 5 Stars
THIS DVD SHOULD BE REQUIRED AND MANDATORY VIEWING FOR EVERY SINGER OR ENTERTAINER IN THE WORLD TODAY. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT. SAM WAS THE BEST SINGER TO EVER LIVE AND TO MY ACCOUNT HAS INFLUENCED MORE SINGERS ACROSS THE BOUNDARIES THAN ANY OTHER SINGER. COUNTRY ARTISTS,POP ARTISTS,JAZZ SINGERS,BLUES SINGERS,ROCK ARTISTS LIKE STEVE PERRY FORMERLY OF JOURNEY AND ROD STEWART HAVE ALL CREDITED SAM COOKE FOR THEIR VOCAL PHRASING AND TONE. SAM WAS ALSO A GENIUS WAY BEFORE HIS TIME. HE KNEW THAT OWNING THE PUBLISHING RIGHTS TO HIS SONGS THAT CAME FROM HIS PEN WAS THE RIGHT MOVE FOR CONTINUAL WEALTH. I WONDER IF P.DIDDY OR BEYONCE OR JAY Z OR R.KELLY ACTUALLY OWN ANY OF THEIR MUSIC? YOU SEE IT DOESN'T MATTER MUCH NOW IN THEIR YOUTH AND HEYDEY-BUT 10,15,20 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE HITS HAVE DRIED UP AND THE WAIST BANDS HAVE EXPANDED AND THERE MUSIC IS STILL ON THE SHELVES MAKING MONEY FOR THE RECORD LABELS AND HARDLY ANY OF THOSE PROFITS ARE COMING THEIR WAY-WELL IT'S GONNA HIT HOME LIKE A GIANT METEOR SLAMMING INTO EARTH. SAM KNEW THIS WAY BACK IN 1957. PRINCE FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT A FEW YEARS BACK AND SO HAS CHAKA KHAN. I WANT EVERY SINGER OUT THERE TO WATCH THIS DVD AND PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO SAM'S DICTION AND ENUNCIATION WHILE HE IS SINGING AND STRIVE FOR THAT IN YOUR OWN SINGING. IT WAS PERFECT. NO SOUL SINGER HAS COME AS CLOSE TO HIS PERFECT ENUNCIATION SINCE HIS TRAGIC DEATH ON 12/11/64. I'M TRYING TO GET DENZEL WASHINGTON TO PORTRAY SAM COOKE IN A MOVIE THAT WILL BE DIRECTED BY SPIKE LEE. IF I CAN GET MR.ALAN KLEIN'S APPROVAL IT HOPEFULLY WILL BE A GO-FOR IT IS LONG,LONG, OVERDUE.
Movie Review: Finally some moving pictures! Summary: 5 Stars
For someone with the stature of Sam Cooke is has always surprised me how little was out there about him. Before 2000 even good CD's and LP's were hard to get. But things have changed since the beginning of this century. VH1 had a special about him and that documentary has now been released on DVD.
Through interviews with family and friends we get a view of his life from an early age, through the Soul Stirrers and his solo work up to his unfortunate death.
We see and hear his brother and sister, Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls and many more. The docu has been written by Peter Guralnick who has just released a 650 page biography on him in october of 2005.
There is also some footage of Sam in action in various tv-shows and that is the best because there really isn't much around. It would have been nice to add those shows in total as a bonus but the 70 minutes of documentary we have now is perfect for people who don't want to be one of the two extensive biographies yet but want to get a good view of what he was like. And he was more than just the interpreter of songs. He wrote them, produced other artists and was an allround business man.
Of course his death is being talked about too, but don't expect the final solution for that, that will probably never come.
It's the only real documentary on him out there but it's worth buying.
Movie Review: WHY SO LONG? Summary: 5 Stars
Why has it taken nearly 40 years to finally film an appreciation of one of the talents that will ALWAYS be around. I only discovered Sam in 1986 as an 18-yr-old from England, but I have listened to his voice every day since - only Jackie Wilson beats Sam. So when this was advertised I was extremely excited - and this DVD does not let me down. Thankfully it is not a tacky movie flick of the great man but a truly beautifully put together tribute. You can feel your heart ache when Sam performs the 'Riddle Song' knowing he lost his son in a drowning accident - you can see the hurt in his face at the end of the performance. You also can feel the long, brutal struggle for equal rights put to pictures and Sam's 'A Change Is Gonna Come'. It does not matter that we don't see the full-length clips of his performances, that's for another day. For now, enjoy the story and the many bonus interviews with associates who clearly still adore Sam Cooke - and so they should. Now if the same makers would now turn their attentions to Jackie Wilson, I can die a happy man. I recommend this DVD to ANYONE who has never heard much about Sam Cooke. A big thankyou to everyone involved.
Movie Review: "Too Long overdue" Summary: 5 Stars
The reviews that I read were excellent;however the DVD..was even better;I must confess though I am probably Sam Cooke's biggest fan;My father introduced me to his music when I was four years old.In 1961 I won first place at the school talent show with my version of "Twisting the Night Away" I was eight years old.Since then I have collected nearly every song..cassette,album you name it..In addition I have a copy of one of his interviews with Dick Clark. The artists of this era should demand that more homage should be given to this legendary entertainer;Every year we do a Black history program and my students fall in love with his music the same way I did;students of all ethnic backgrounds..The movie will be a blockbuster if they get the right people casted..I see Johnny Gill in the lead role and Grady Harrell as Jackie Wilson..Gerald Austin of the Manhattans as S.R.Crain..Spielberg should direct this and Quincy jones should do the music..with Elmer Bernstein doing the sound track..Awsome story..Awsome life that was too short.and awsome music that has stood the test of time !!!
