Movie Reviews of Salem's LotMovie Review: AKA: The Return Of Count Orlock. Summary: 5 Stars
Well putting aside the disimilarites from the book, Salems Lot was a wonderfull tingler in the grand tradition of the old Universal Horror Movies.
A. Quaint old sleepy town with your average blase town folk
B. A town son now writer returns home.
C. The creepy antique store owner who seems to hide something sinister behind those charming smiles and pleasantries.
E.That rotting dilapitated house so frightening even outside in the light that it turns the greatest heros spine to mush.
And Mr Barlow, I did like him and there seems to be irony here in that obviously his makeup was based on Max Schreks portrayal in FW Murnaus 1922 silent Nosferatu. Murnau never paid the Stoker estate for the rights to the novels characters and lo and behold over 50 years later it seems someone has done the same to him.
Movie Review: A Treat for Vampire fans everywhere! Summary: 5 Stars
This is fun and scary stuff from an equally fun and scary film maker, Tobe Hooper. The performances by David Soul, James Mason, Bonnie Bedelia, and the rest of the supporters are all first rate. This brilliantly uses music, atmosphere, and tension scenes to scare the viewer rather than graphic violence or gore. These scenes include: a corpse coming to life in front of Soul, Goeffrey Lewis' transformation, Mason and Nalder's attack of a family in their home, and the child vampire tapping on his friend's window in the middle of the night. Hooper provides plenty of action as well as scares. If fans enjoy this film, they should definitely seek out the very similar Needful Things. Caution: Seek out the longer 180 minute version of Salem's Lot, not the 112 minute cut. Well done and highly recommeded.
Movie Review: A Classic Horror Movie Summary: 5 Stars
Salem's Lot is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I have seen it at least a dozen times. Despite being a made-for-tv movie that came out in 1979, it is quite well done. The music certainly helps to create a creepy atmosphere and the special effects stay within their limits. By that I mean that a lot is left to the imagination rather than cheesey gore or weak special effects. Scenes like the younger brother floating outside scratching the window, or the crate in the truck moving forward by itself (both scenes not in the book) still give me the creeps! If you are looking for a good story rather that a lot of gore or special effects, then you should check out this classic.
Movie Review: Salems Lot Summary: 5 Stars
"For all those who are into classic Vampire movies, this one's fantastic." There are parts of this movie throughout that will literally make you jump from your seat! If you haven't watched this one, you need too because it's full of thrills and chills. David soul, James Mason, Lance Kerwin, Bonnie Bedelia, and Lew Ayres do a wonderful job. This movie truly will "creep you out." You'll most certainly want this one for your collection. Yours Truly Garry E. Movie Review: Don't Compare It To The Novel. Just LOVE It As It IS!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Probably the BEST scary made for TV movie in my opinion. Yes, the novel is great and this made for tv movie doesn't follow it at all. (How many Stephen King novels DO, by the way?) Directed by the great Tobe Hooper with the forboding James Mason (Humbert Humbert from the film Lolita), Bonnie Bedelia, David Soul, George Dzundza, and Bonnie Barlett (St. Elsewhere) just to name a few. This movie STILL gives me nightmares of the little boy unfortunately turned into a vampire and in the middle of the night, goes a' scratching on his big brother's window to let him in! This has some GREAT special effects given the year that it was produced and it has aged QUITE gracefully.
