Movie Reviews of Sadist

Movie Review: THE SADIST is a perfect Cult movie for the whole party!
Summary: 5 Stars

I hate it when low budget movie companies release an old classic such as THE SADIST on to DVD and make some misleading, color copy cover. First of all, the movie was filmed in black and white. People who put color pictures of the movie on the front or back of the DVD box are just trying to trick the general public into thinking that it's a more "modern" film. As if the prospect of anything else (black and white) is considered lame by some. Horror and Cult cinema fans already know what they like and it doesn't matter if the movie is released in color or black and white. After all, a good movie is just a good movie. Period. Besides that, plenty of movies were filmed in black and white that most Horror fans consider to be "classics." NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, GODZILLA (the original) and WHITE ZOMBIE are just a few of the many that Horror fans have come to love over the years. You don't need to add color into the picture just to win fans over.

Also, the cover they made for this DVD release is just awful. Judging based solely on the "tooty fruity" color job they did on the front cover, one might get the impression that this movie is going to be cheesy and corny. Well, it is pretty cheesy during some scenes but that's part of the charm to THE SADIST. They should have made a darker and more serious cover if you ask me.

THE SADIST is yet another black and white gem of Cult cinema that deserves more credit that it's issued. The basic plot of the movie simple and effective. Three people (a couple and an older man) are on their way to a sports event one sunny afternoon. The group decides to stop by a lonely gas station to refuel and such. After waiting for about ten minutes with no service, the group decides to walk around the station and look for the employees. Soon they realize that the gas station is part of a small farm house and a junk yard. Further investigation reveals that nobody is at the gas station and that something terrible has happened there. The phone lines have been cut and the residents are all dead!

Enter raving psychopath Charlie Tibbs, played by the always wonderful Arch Hall Jr. Him and his girlfriend have been traveling around the Country, murdering people for no good reason other than just because. The two killers hold the three commuters hostage, eventually shooting one of them (the older guy) in the face with a gun! Needless to say, things get worse for our hero's before they get better.

What THE SADIST does well is build up tension. Everybody does a good acting job and the simple story builds up to full steam by the end of the movie. Some of the psychological torture scenes might not be up to today's standards but that shouldn't hold anybody back from seeing this fun and enjoyable little Horror thriller. What it lacks in blood and gore it makes up for in story and acting.

Gore hounds, skip this one. Only a few dead bodies and hardly any special effects. If your looking for something "old school" on the level with HELLRAISER, HOSTEL, SAW and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, this movie isn't it.

Over all, THE SADIST is an enjoyable film and I highly recommend it for any fan of Cult cinema. It's also the perfect film for that party where you don't want to offend anyone that isn't into buckets of blood and horrifying scenes of mindless gore. It's a thriller that should please everyone.

Over and out!
