Movie Reviews of Sade - Lovers LiveMovie Review: Smooth operator. . . . Summary: 5 Stars
Less angular than in her younger days, Sade's face has aquired a careworn beauty that is just breathtaking! She may wear her heart on her sleeve, but she also proves that an "older (wo)man is like an elegant wine." This concert tour, her first in nearly a decade, finds a performer who needs no pyrotechnics or aerobic stage choreography to put on a great show! In fact, the simplest touches (i.e., lighting effects, a vocal florish from a backup singer, or an instrumental accent) are among the best moments, and she repeatedly shows that she can actually rock the house and bring the crowd to its feet. Her versions of "Cherish the Day," "Kiss of Life," "Somebody Already Broke My Heart," "No Ordinary Love" and "Lover's Rock" are moving, pulsating anthems that both celebrate and mourn the enduring, frustrating power and pain of love. Her surprising performances of "Sweetest Taboo," and "Paradise," in which she and her excellent male backup singers perform sexy dance interludes, give much credence to the adage that "less is more." On record, "Is it a Crime" is a slow-burning, moody, jazzy tale of unrequited love--a song I never imagined would be a good choice to include in a live concert. However, Sade's electrifying delivery of this song (replete with sensational electric guitar and saxophone solos) is a MAJOR highlight! This CD is definitely a MUST-HAVE for fans of Sade. . .
Movie Review: Lovers Live Forever! Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to this, i have not actually watched a full Sade concert on video. I have been a fan for a while and was very surprised to see this live concert in superb aural and visual clarity.
The wild fans cheer with each Sade number, and not to mention how great this 40-ish soul bird looks in that Chinese cheongsam. She's hot. what's even hotter are the songs. From the breathtaking 1st number Cherish The Day to oldies such as Smooth Operator and Jezebel and newer stuff suchn as By Your Side, you know you havent heard anything like this yet. the old songs take on a new dimension, making them as relevant as they were 15 years back. Sade sounds terribly soulful and her stage charm is irresistable. She doesn't say much but her lo-tech-hi-style show promises to be fun too especially when Sade take to the floor and dances quite admirably. Something i didn't quite expect of her and the fact that she pulls it off with so much grace is definitely worth watching this show.
Her costume change next brings on her funkier edge, where she performs the very funky Flow from Lovers Rock. The rock rocked every part of it. Her backup singers and band are pretty cool too, sychronizing with her seamlessly on each number.
If you havent had the chance to see this lady in person, see her on this cool DVD/video.
Movie Review: The greatest live performance I've heard Summary: 5 Stars
Let's be honest! For me the only problem with this live performance is that it's too good! The live versions of her songs are so good that the studio versions from her though excellent albums will appear bland to you compared to these live recordings.
Unsurprisingly, the selection of songs, well-balanced between her classic hits and the songs from "Lovers Rock", is top-notch.
I won't quote a song in particular because I love them all. The musicians are really amazing, so is the backup singer too (what an incredible voice! he would deserve to make a solo career, truly!) but of course what is the most worthy here is Sade Adu herself! As classy, elegant and seductive as ever, she's a real diva, in the noble sense of the term. Her voice is like no other, and is so emotional. Her musical style is simply unique, blending soul, pop, smooth jazz, funk with latin, carribean or even reggae influences. One can see thanks to the DVD format that she doesn't seem to be cold like the media say, she seems very generous with her audience. By the way I have to say I loved her dance steps in "The Sweetest Taboo".
To me Sade is one of the best artists ever! This live DVD is definitely to check if you are a Sade fan. It's my favorite live recording (Maxwell comes 2nd with his MTV Unplugged)
Movie Review: Experience Sade's lushly understated cool Summary: 5 Stars
Before I say anything else I have to point out one reviewer's ridiculous comment that Sade's clothing looks like a school marm's. So a woman can't wear a tasteful dress with splits on the sides and a ruffled blouse with a pair of slimming black pants and still be sexy? Sade is a grown woman and although she doesn't wear the midriff bearing dress from 1994's Sade Live, she's still jaw droppingly gorgeous as ever. Check out some other concerts if you want practically bare body parts and leave Ms. Adu to the grown and sexy. Ok?
Can you handle 2 hours of The Lady and her men? If so, pick this dvd up! Sade's voice is captivating as always, the band's playing and Leroy's backup vocals are on point, and the colors of the set are eye catching. An improvement over Sade Live is that Lovers Live includes shots of audience members grooving and singing along to the music. The clip of two lovers gently swaying to Kiss of Life while holding each other is beautiful. The bonus material includes backstage footage of Sade and the boys getting ready for the show, shout outs from fans, black and white stills of the concert, and the King of Sorrow video directed by Sophie Muller (who also shot the concert). Kick back and enjoy.
Movie Review: MESMERIZING Summary: 5 Stars
What can I say about Sade that you haven't already heard? Nothing. You know her band is as tight as they come; you know her lyrics are thought provoking and insightful; you know her beauty is etheral and angelic; you know her concerts are treasures to be savored over and over. What you may not know is that "Lovers Live" is a must-buy DVD. Don't feel that because you own the DVD of her earlier tour that this DVD is superflous. It's not. There are many songs on this collection that were not included in the first. Also, of the songs that are repeated on "Lovers Live", the arrangements are changed enough to make this listen a new experience. Even "Red Eye" received a significant updating. The best thing about watching a Sade concert is her command of the audience. Sade is a true beauty, but she doesn't flaunt her assets like so many other female singers. There are no bootylicious aspirations, thong-exposing outfits, acrobatic dance moves, or salacious lyrics. Simply a beautiful, talented woman doing what she does best: mesmerizing an audience for two hours!
