Movie Reviews of Running ScaredMovie Review: One of the best "buddy" movies EVER! Summary: 5 Stars
Very short review, this is, with the possible and sole exception of the Redford/Newman "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", the best "buddy" movie EVER made. Crystal and Hines are *perfectly* matched, the surrounding cast of people like Daniel Hedaya and Joe Pantoliano are as hilarious as they are spectacular. A very young Jimmy Smits makes a great villain (and an even younger Jon Gries ... also great and almost unrecognizable). If you don't LOVE this movie, there's something very wrong with you. The on screen chemistry between Crystal and Hines is amazing. It is my understanding that they always wanted to do another project together, but Hines tragically died before they got the chance. Peter Hyams does a great job of directing and the opening theme by Doobie Brother alum Michael McDonald fits the film like a glove. I've watched this movie at least 100 times in the nearly 25 years since it came out and I still find it to be a thoroughly enjoyable film. If you have not seen it, get some popcorn, sit down, crank the stereo WAY up and enjoy it.
Movie Review: Funny, warm, exciting....awesome Summary: 5 Stars
Whether viewed as a buddy film, a cop movie or a comedy (perhaps even a love story), this movie succeeds big time. The chemistry between Hines and Crystal is great. They seem a natural pairing, not a forced one for humor sake, yet there is plenty of humor.
Jimmy Smits and Joey Pantoliano play great roles. Smits, the crime kingpin Julio Gonzalez, is convincing and realistic. Joey P. as 'Snake', a weasel and small time hood, has his share of humorous moments. Both supply more than just a 'one note' performance.
Even Crystal's onscreen wife (or ex-wife) plays a very underrated role. As the smaller story, it certainly has moments of greatness, too.
The special effects and chase scenes are done well, not too dramatic to be unrealistic. The use of Chicago as the location is brilliant (although I am a Chicagoan).
Even almost 20 years later, this movie still stands as one of my all-time favorites and it should be totally enjoyable for anyone else, too!
Movie Review: a lost jewel Summary: 5 Stars
There are quilty pleasures{Road House} and those movies that are so bad that they become good{Show Girls} HOWEVER this not one of those. It is one of those jewels that doesn't show up much on tv and got lost in theaters. The teaming of Hines and Crystal is a once in life time thing and sorry to say it turned out to be just that. The comedy flows and is not forced. The leads make you like them and you belive that they are real cops. The chase on the El tracks is great and the building shoot out at the end is well done. Hines has a nice turn when he "arrests" another man's lover for his own. The montage at Key West is nice. But the sound track is 70's gold and realy moves the movie forward. This movie holds up well. It's really was a shame that the sequel was never made. Maybe that was a good thing because the sequel could never live up to the original. Look for this movie and enjoy!
Movie Review: The Most Underrated Movie of all Time Summary: 5 Stars
Running Scared is an '80s buddy-cop classic. The movie features one of the best chase sequences and mall shootout scenes I've ever seen as well as many lighthearted comedic moments. The real screen stealer here is the chemistry between Billy Crystal and Greg Hines, however. They just have such a presence together that makes you feel good and believe that their characters are best friends. The fact that hardly anyone talks about this movie or gives it any recognition is very frustrating. Overall, Running Scared is a great movie that incorporates action, humor, romance and a feel good mood. I'd definitely recommend it
Movie Review: Chicago Cops know how to have fun, and not be scared! Summary: 5 Stars
The teaming of Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as Chicago cops hit it dead on the head. Both of the carry off the comedic, wise cracking tandem to a "T". Lot's of fun, action and a great sound track, all backed by the city of Chicago (and Florida) and what a great chase. While Bullet, the French Connection and the Seven Ups may have the greatest movie car chase scenes ever, Running Scared takes their car chase scene to a whole new level... on the "EL"!
If you like cop movies, and you love comedy (and Chicago), you'll definitely enjoy Running Scared.
