Movie Review: A Wondrous Wallow in Gore and Human Depravity.....Deserves 6 Stars !!!

This movie combines the finest aspects of Pulp Fiction, True Romance, and Sin City, with a relentless pace that leaves you exhausted but thoroughly entertained. Brilliantly directed by Wayne Kramer, it features some of the finest gore, violence, perversion, and sex that I have ever witnessed.
Paul Walker delivers a hyperkinetic performance as a low grade mobster who fails to dispose of an incriminating handgun and spends the next 24 hours in a hellish nightmare while trying to recover it. He is joined in this complex journey by a superb supporting cast: Vera Famiga, with her incomparable eyes, an exotic, dynamic, terrific, but too-infrequently-seen actress; Chazz Palminteri, the soul of evil and treachery (at least in this tale); Cameron Bright, one of the few child actors who actually improves a movie; and a host of pimps (reminiscent of Gary Oldman's part in True Romance), good-hearted hookers, thugs, and pedophiles. In a brilliant twist, the only "normal looking" two people in this entire ensemble turns out to be (by far) the most twisted and evil of the lot.
The occasionally "artsy" camera work is actually an asset to the film and does not detract from the flow, as it frequently does in less capable hands. The sex scene (on a running washing machine) literally rises way above the mundane and obligatory purient scenes we have come to expect, as do the shootouts, point blank crotch-blasting, and aggravated assault(s) with a hockey puck. This is a relentlessly original, visually exciting, thrilling-chilling gem of a movie....a "grim" fairy tale for fans of the genre. God knows, even the closing credits are exceptional !!! If any criticism is possible, it might be directed at the "Hollywood" ending which was not in keeping with the gritty realism of the movie, but it definitely does not detract significantly from the whole experience.
If this genre is to your taste, do yourself a huge favor and rent or buy the DVD immediately. It represents the best possible way to spend two hours....unless of course you happen to have a running washing machine handy.
