Movie Reviews of Rudy (Special Edition)

Movie Review: Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!
Summary: 5 Stars

In this dismal Notre Dame footbal season, thank God we still have Rudy! I am also of Irish descent, and rather short and have always been adamant about proving others wrong when I said I was going to do something and they said I couldn't so I identify rather easily with this film. A wise man once told me talent is overrated, it's hard work that counts. That sums up Rudy. The kid that wanted to play for Notre Dame. While blue-chip, highly recruited, super atheletes stew and mope about not playing and giving half-hearted efforts in practice, Rudy gives it everything he could possibly give and more, all in the hope on one day dressing up in a game uniform and running out of that tunnel on a Saturday afternoon in South Bend while his dad watches on. I feel a tear coming on, I cry every time I watch this film and I ain't much for crying but to see this little man make his dreams come true, it just gets to me. Jon Favreau plays his tutor, mentor and has a great role as watch for Vince Vaughn in a small role. This is where Vince and Jon met and came up with the idea of SWINGERS. Ned Beatty is as always terrific.

Movie Review: Required watching for the ND student
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the first movie I bought once I arrived at Notre Dame. It came just in time for the first football game, and we watched it before the first pep rally. We watched it again this year before football season started, and will likely continue to. I'd like to add that my dad was in the crowd for the football stadium scenes and that I was one of like 6 people in the theater for it on opening night.

Back to the movie though. Great movie, shows how perseverance and everything really can pay off in the end and how anybody can accomplish their dreams, no matter how big, if they just set their minds to it and work their butts off. A great mix of drama and a little football to keep things interesting. Great cinematography as well, shows off how gorgeous our school is. The music's great, you can't help but get pumped up when they start playing the music in the "Tryouts" sequence and the final "Ruu-dy! Ruu-dy!" cheer has remained in sports culture, my high school team always picked the smallest kid and referred to him as Rudy.

Movie Review: One of the truly great movies of the nineties
Summary: 5 Stars

Sean Astin gives his best performance as Rudy, an undersized football player who decides at a young age he wants to play for Notre Dame. Some obstacles stand in his way before he can even play a down. For one, his family has little money and no desire to send Rudy to college when he has shown no interest in high school. To get onto the hallowed grounds of ND, Rudy first goes to Sacred Heart to get his grades up and work on the grounds crew that prepares the football field. Eventually, he does get into Notre Dame, but he really has no football skills so he doesn't play in a game. He does however have the biggest heart of any player who tries out. Rarely does he get through a day of tryouts without blood dripping from his lip, but he does make the practice squad where he bides his time hoping to play in a game. This is another film that builds up to the final scenes. I don't want to give away anything. The only thing I will say is that I get goosebumps and a lump in my throat every time. A must see if there ever was one.

Movie Review: Absolutely Wonderful - My Favorite Sports Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to admit that for as long as this movie has been out, I hadn't seen it until recently. I was throughly impressed. Yes, a movie script is going to be different from reality because they have to fit years of actual experience into something under two hours; however, I thought it was done very, very well.

The special interviews were fantastic to watch after viewing the movie and realizing that many of the elements that I wondered were true or not actually were true. If you haven't seen it, I won't give it away, but watch the special features and you may be surprised.

You can search YouTube to watch the actual footage of the last few minutes of the game in which Rudy played.

This is by far my favorite sports movie (and there are some good ones out there). I love how the movie depicts years and years of hard work leading up to his dream whereas other sports movies, the team or player become whipped into shape during one short season.

Great movie.

Movie Review: THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Summary: 5 Stars

Director David Anspaugh who brought us the brilliant HOOSIERS has another winner in this heartwarming true story of RUDY, a young man whose dream of playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish reached a heartfelt fruition in his last game as a senior. Sean Astin was an inspired choice to play the title role; as he proved later in the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, Astin is the kind of man who would be the kid brother or best friend to other men; or the shy, introverted boyfriend to a really nice girl. Astin is also an actor who embellishes his roles with a rare intimacy and credibility that works especially well in a film like this. He is ably supported by Jon Favreau as his rotund best friend; Charles S. Dutton who is marvelous as the maintenance man who serves as a surrogate coach/father to Rudy; and Lili Taylor as his girlfriend. RUDY pushes all the right emotional buttons, but it is also a very upbeat and uplifting story of one young man's temerity and patience.
