Movie Reviews of RopeMovie Review: Great print of a great movie Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of Hitchock's best films - they are all great, but this one and "Rear Window" are my favourites. The technical transfer of this film to DVD is solid; the storyline is incredible, given the time in which this film was produced.
There's quite a bit more "story" to the story, in the relationship between the two main characters - a relationship that possibly doomed this film to very specific audiences in 1948 when it was released. Don't miss this one - if it's not in your Hitchcock collection, it should be. Definitely ranks as one of the top 5.
There are also a number of extras on the disc that are very well-done and entertaining, especially to see how the film was made using an incredibly limited number of takes (a first for film), using something only Hitch would have pioneered to camoflauge the end of each reel and provide a seamless transition to the next.
Enjoy!
Movie Review: The Story of the Perfect Murder Directed Perfectly Summary: 5 Stars
This film was fantastic! I had seen it when I was much younger and remembered it being good, but having just re-watched it I was struck by how much it felt like a filmed play. The very long shots helped establish the real-time aspect of this thrilling story and Hitchcock's brilliant directing really shines. Great performances all around and with any Hitchcock picture, every moment feels like it was carefully thought out and executed for the greatest effect. Watching Jimmy Stewart (Rupert) piece together the evidence was as exciting as watching John Dall (Brandon) and Farley Granger (Phillip) try to keep it together. I've read that Hitchcock wasn't particularly fond of this film, and I'll grant that he certainly has created better films, but I'd take an evening of Rope over an evening of Final Destination 3 any day.
Movie Review: bighting off more than you can chew Summary: 5 Stars
Two idealistic young students commit a crime thinking they are following the ideas of their former teacher - only to see everything slowly fall apart... Hitchock's stage-like technicolor debut does not move the camera very far, but like 'rear window' and 'dial m for murder' - just enough because we do not need to move very far to face basic and suspensful plot elements, in fact, they are all the more poignant when we see them magnified in a particular setting..
Rope is not Hitchcock's best film.. but it is a great film nontheless, featuring great performances and witty dialogue.. James stewart is always fun to watch and his understated performance drives the show.. I would highly recommend 'rope' as one of hitchcock's more interesting film expeditions..
Movie Review: A Sleeper Summary: 5 Stars
This film is truly a sleeper of suspence flicks. An anxiety evoling plot around the murder by two prep school buddies of another inspired by the tutelage of a former teacher masterly played by James Stewart. Hints of eugenics and homosexuality add to the character development as the dominating alum manipulates his weaker half. See if you don't sympathize with the victim's father and former girlfriend who are among the invited guests at the dinner party where their loved one just took his last drink. Little do they know he is still among them, dressed, pressed, and folded like antique linen.
Movie Review: Different Hitchcock Summary: 5 Stars
This is a unique Hitchcock film. It is not only the first color film that he made but it is different than all the others in a sense that all action is taking place in one room, an appartment in New York City and in continu ous time- much lke the tv series 24. The plot is very interesting and it evolves slowly but in a cunning way and Hitchcock proves that he can be a master of directing even if he is confined in a room.
